Elements of Social Antagonism in the Fiction of Thomas Hardy

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl analyzovat prvky sociálního antagonismu ve vybraných dílech fikce viktoriánského autora Thomase Hardyho. Na příkladech z díl Tess of d'Urberville a Jude the Obscure dokazuje, že Hardy ve svích dílech podrobuje viktoriánskou společnost kritice. Práce se zabývá elementy sociálního antagonismu které se dají nalézt v socialních strukturách, a instituciích dané doby, jako jsou církev, manželství, edukační systém a sociální systém. Hardy napadá ve svých novelách sociální konvence a dogmata, které jsou zapříčiněny konformizmem a sociální nerovnoprávností. Tato práce rozebírá způsoby jakými Hardy tyto protiklady vyobrazuje ve svých dílech, na příkladech poskytnutých jeho postavami z řad vyšších i nižších sociálních vrstev. Hardy je ve svých vyobrazeních velmi objektivní a snaží se ukázat chyby na příkladech jak postav z nižších, tak i vyšších sociálních vrstev. Snaží se předvést sociální a náboženské omezení platná v časech viktoriánské Anglie, které kontrastují s individualismem a emocionalitou jeho postav, které bojují o to, aby si zachovaly své morální hodnoty a soucit pod velkým tlakem, který na nich tato dogmata a omezení vyvíjejí.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on two of the novels written by Thomas Hardy – Tess of d'Urbervilles, and his most controversial work Jude the Obscure. It addresses the issues of social antagonism in his novels in the context of rural Victorian society. Hardy questions in his novels the social conventions and dogmas, which are caused by conformism and inequality in the society. This work elaborates on the ways Hardy depicts these antagonistic features between the characters of lower and higher social class. Hardy is in his depiction's very unbiased and depicts the flaws of both lower class characters even though he sympathizes with them as well as the flaws of his upper class characters. The social and religious restrictions of Victorian England are put in contrast to the individualism and emotionality of his characters, which struggle to retain their compassion and moral values under the pressure of these conventions and dogmas which are trying inhibit their individuality.
