Decomposition and short-term changes in the overburden organic layer of the soil of calamitous clearings in relation to habitat conversion

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá hodnocením vlivu různých metod potěžebního managementu kalamitních holin na dekompoziční procesy organické hmoty v lesních ekosystémech zasažených kůrovcovou kalamitou. Cílem studie bylo porovnat rychlost rozkladu organické hmoty na holinách s mechanickou přípravou půdy (frézování), na holinách bez mechanické přípravy (s vyklizením klestu nebo bez něj) a na kontrolních porostech. Dekompozice byla sledována pomocí dekompozičních pytlíků naplněných směsným vzorkem nadložní organické vrstvy, které byly rozmístěny na experimentálních plochách a analyzovány v různých časových intervalech. Výsledky naznačují nejvyšší rychlost rozkladu pod porostem, následovanou frézovanými holinami, zatímco nejpomalejší rozklad byl zaznamenán na holinách bez dalšího zásahu. Tyto rozdíly však nebyly statisticky průkazné. Zjištěné trendy přispívají k lepšímu porozumění dynamiky rozkladu organické hmoty po disturbancích a mohou sloužit jako vodítko pro volbu vhodného managementu lesních holin v oblastech postižených kůrovcovou kalamitou.

Abstract:

This thesis evaluates the effects of different post-disturbance management methods on decomposition processes of organic matter in forest ecosystems affected by bark beetle outbreaks. The aim of the study was to compare the decomposition rate of organic matter on clear-cut areas with mechanical site preparation (mulching), on untreated clear-cuts (with or without slash removal), and in control forest stands. Decomposition was assessed using litterbags filled with a mixed sample of the forest floor organic layer, which were placed on experimental plots and analyzed at various time intervals. The results suggest the highest decomposition rates occurred under forest cover, followed by mulched clear cuts, while the slowest decomposition was observed on unmanaged clear-cuts. However, these differences were not statistically significant. The observed trends contribute to a better understanding of organic matter dynamics following disturbances and may serve as a basis for selecting appropriate management practices for forest clearings in areas affected by bark beetle outbreaks.
