Diversity and biology of monoxenous trypanosomatids on a broad and specific scale

Abstract:

The flagellates of the family Trypanosomatidae are well-known parasites of vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants. While dixenous (infecting two hosts) trypanosomatids, such as Trypanosoma spp. or Leishmania spp., have been predominantly studied due to medical, veterinary, and economical importance, their monoxenous relatives (parasitizing only invertebrates) remained neglected for a long time. The interest in monoxenous trypanosomatids increased in recent years, since this group demonstrates an astonishing potential for adaptation to various environmental challenges, and therefore the study of these organisms may shed light on various aspects of eukaryotic evolution. In this thesis, four publications, where I participated, are included. One of them was focused on the diversity and host specificity of monoxenous trypanosomatids in Papua New Guinea assessed using molecular phylogenetics. Two publications described peculiarities in morphology, development and overall life strategy that evolved in parasites adapted to inhabit their insect hosts. In addition, one publication clarified the evolutionary relationships between two Angomonas spp. and their endosymbiotic bacteria.

Abstract:

Bičíkovci z čeledi Trypanosomatidae jsou známými parazity obratlovců, bezobratlých a rostlin. Zatímco dixenní (infikující dva hostitele) trypanosomatidy, jako jsou Trypanosoma spp. nebo Leishmania spp., byly studovány převážně pro medicínský, veterinární a ekonomický význam, jejich monoxenní příbuzní (parazitující pouze na bezobratlých) zůstávali dlouhou dobu opomíjeni. Zájem o monoxenní trypanosomatidy se v posledních letech zvýšil, protože tato skupina vykazuje úžasný potenciál pro adaptaci na různé environmentální výzvy, a proto studium těchto organismů může vrhnout světlo na různé aspekty eukaryotické evoluce. V této práci jsou zahrnuty čtyři publikace, na kterých jsem se podílela. Jedna z nich byla zaměřena na diverzitu a hostitelskou specifitu monoxenních trypanosomatid z Papui Nové Guineji hodnocenou pomocí molekulární fylogenetiky. Dvě publikace popsaly zvláštnosti v morfologii, vývoji a celkové životní strategii, které se vyvinuly u parazitů přizpůsobených k osídlení jejich hmyzích hostitelů. Poslední publikace objasnila evoluční vztahy mezi dvěma Angomonas spp. a jejich endosymbiotickými bakteriemi.
