Focus on fluency in online interaction in EFL classes: How do teachers initiate and maintain exchanges?

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá způsoby, jakými učitelé iniciují sekvence zaměřené na komunikaci mluvčích v synchronní výuce angličtiny jako cizího jazyka, probíhající prostřednictvím videohovoru skrze komunikační platformy. Cílem této práce je analyzovat postupy a praktiky, jež učitelé používají, a způsoby, jimiž na ně žáci reagují. Teoretická část se zabývá povahou institucionálního dialogu v souvislosti s výukou cizího jazyka. Tato část představuje důležité interakční aspekty, které napomáhají realizovat interakci ve třídě, směřující k dosažení vytyčených institucionálních cílů. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že při zaměření na komunikační stránku interakce hraje roli aktivní participace ze strany žáků a vytváření komunikačního prostoru ze strany učitele. Výzkumná část práce analyzuje pomocí metody konverzační analýzy šest vyučovacích hodin anglického jazyka, z nichž bylo vybráno deset ukázek pro tuto práci. Vybrané ukázky prezentují široký repertoár postupů a metod, jimiž se učitelé snaží vytvořit žákům prostor pro komunikaci v cizím jazyce. Z analýzy vyplývá, že mezi nejčastější praktiky patří strategické kladení otázek, úmyslně nedokončené repliky, poskytnutí více času k odpovědi a pozdržení evaluace v základní třísložkové sekvenci, kdy učitel ve třetí pozici sekvence pokládá žákům další otázky založené na jejich předchozích odpovědích. Vzhledem k omezeným možnostem použití nonverbálních prostředků v online interakci, učitelé také jasně a srozumitelně určovali mluvčího, který měl na jejich otázky odpovídat a upozorňovali žáky na situace, kdy vyzývali všechny přítomné studenty k možnosti odpovědi.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the ways in which teachers initiate exchanges with their learners in meaning-and-fluency contexts during synchronous online EFL lessons in Czechia. The aim of this research is to uncover what practices teachers use in a virtual classroom environment and how the learners respond to them. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the basic features of both institutional dialogue in general and classroom discourse in the institutional context. It presents some specific interactional features through which the process of learning can be accomplished and which promote further interaction and participation. Drawing on the assumption that teachers and students jointly establish understanding and contribute to the co-construction of meaning, the concept of Classroom Interactional Competence (CIC) and e-Classroom Interactional Competencies (e-CIC) is concluded to be essential for online teaching practice to effectively use interaction as a tool to mediate and assist language learning in an online environment. Using conversation analysis as a research method, the findings present online interaction from six 45-minute-long synchronous online lessons, which were transcribed and analysed in detail. Ten selected extracts in the empirical part of this thesis illustrate the practices which proved to be the most effective in terms of promoting extended learner talk; these include: strategically designed questions, use of designedly incomplete utterance, extended wait time and withholding the evaluation turn within the IRF structure by asking elaboration questions built on learners’ previous contributions. Considering turn allocation, the research shows that due to the limitations in the use of non-verbal resources such as mutual gaze and body language, the teachers clearly indicated the speaker they were nominating or the change of nomination strategy.
