Korean Occidentalism? The Czech Republic in the Eyes of Koreans in Nošovice and Its Surroundings

Abstract:

Diplomová práce navazuje na práci bakalářskou, na které jsem pracovala v roce 2010. Obě studie jsou založeny na poznání korejského národa v České republice, především tedy v lokalitě Nošovic v Moravskoslezském kraji. Důvod tohoto výzkumu vzešel především díky výstavbě automobilky Hyundai v Nošovicích. Diplomová práce se zabývá imaginacemi korejské minority o České republice, zemi, která se stala pro část korejského národa novým domovem a místem, kde nyní šíří jméno společnosti Hyundai. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretický rámec se staví do opozice proti Saidovému dílu Orientalismus. Autoři Ian Buruma a Avishai Margalit vytvořili kontrastní dílo Okcidentalismus, v němž čtenáře seznamují s okcidentálními projevy východních národů, které jsou většinou vykreslovány v tom nejhorším extremistickém světle. Ukázkou jsou velice negativní události z dějin lidstva, kdy Východ fanaticky brojil proti Západu. Snahou diplomové práce je prozkoumat a zjistit, zda jsou okcidentální projevy i u korejské minority v Nošovicích tak silné s převahou nenávistných prvků, nebo tomu je jinak. Pojmy orientalismus i okcidentalismus vznikly jako následky lidských imaginací, jež hlouběji prozkoumal a pro geografii rozpracoval Thomas Hylland Eriksen a Derek Gregory. Praktická část práce byla provedena v terénu a stojí především na bázi rozhovorů s korejskými respondenty, kteří jsou zaměstnáni v automobilce Hyundai. Závěr práce přinese analýzu všech rozhovorů, které proběhly. Výsledky byly konfrontovány s definicí okcidentalismu. Práce jako celek může podpořit zcela jiný pohled na okcidentalismus, který má přátelskou a lidštější podobu, než pojetí Burumy a Margalita.

Abstract:

This master thesis reassumes the work of the bachelor thesis, which I worked on in 2010. Both studies are based on learning of the Korean nation living in the Czech Republic, mainly in the village of Nošovice, in the Moravian-Silesian region. The reason for this research emerged mainly as a result of the building of the Hyundai car factory in Nošovice. The master thesis deals with the imaginations of the Korean minority of the Czech Republic, the country, which became a new home for a part of the Korean nation and place, where they spread the name of the Hyundai company. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical framework stands in opposition to Said´s Orientalism. The authors Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit created a contrastive work named Occidentalism, in which they introduce the readers to occidental displays of the Eastern nations that are mostly expressed in the worst extremist light. Many of the negative events from our human history, when the East inveighed fanatically against the West, are a good example of this tendency. The objective of the work is to research and to find out whether the occidental displays are that strong with the Korean minority in Nošovice too with a domination of hateful elements or whether the situation here is different. The ideas of Orientalism and Occidentalism both developed as results of human imaginations that were researched more deeply by Thomas Hylland Eriksen and Derek Gregory. The practical part of the thesis has been carried out through the field research and is based mainly on numerous interviews with Korean respondents who are employed at the Hyundai car factory. The final part of the work brings the analysis of all of the interviews that have been taken. The results have been confronted with the definition of Occidentalism. The thesis as a whole can support a completely different look at Occidentalism, which has more friendly and human form, than Buruma?s and Margalit?s theory.
