Social Representations of Death in the Population of Theravada Monks and their Supporters in Sri Lanka

Abstract:

"Dovedně žitá přítomnost přináší příjemnou budoucnost", tak lze jednou větou vyjádřit výsledek výzkumu sociálních reprezentací smrti u populací theravádových mnichů a jejich podpůrců na Srí Lance, který je v historii československé psychologie jedinečným příkladem etnopsychologického výzkumu. Základní osnovu zdravého rozumu, do níž jsou vetkány sdílené představy a užívané praktiky vyrovnání se smrtí, tvoří etická podmíněnost prožívání v dimenzi dovedné-nedovedné (pin-pau, sinh.; kusala-akusala, páli), společně s vlastností znovunastávání (paralo, sinh.; punabbhava, páli) přesahující horizont života určité osoby. Práce je členěna do jedenácti kapitol. Hlavní důraz je kladen na metodologický a empirický aspekt. Teorie sociálních reprezentací, ze které pojednání vychází, a která určuje systematicky použitou metodologii zakotvené teorie, je částečně věnována kapitola první a třetí, v úplnosti pak kapitola druhá. Teoreticko-metodologický rámec výzkumného projektu je rozpracován v kapitole třetí. Následující kapitola čtyři specifikuje design výzkumu navržený nejenom pro výzkum již zmíněných sociálních skupin mnichů a jejich podpůrců na Srí Lance, ale také relevantních sociálních skupin v České republice (kapitola deset). Zatímco kapitolu pět lze považovat stále za čistě metodologickou, rozpracovávám zde postup výzkumu tvořený opakujícími se fázemi výzkumu, v kapitolách následujících se již snoubí systematické provádění metodických principů se zkoumanou empirií. Kapitoly šest, sedm a osm jsou věnovány jednotlivým stádiím realizace výzkumného projektu na Srí Lance. Tak je vytvořen pevný metodologicko-empirický základ, na kterém vyrostly text završující kapitoly, devátá, věnovaná sociálním reprezentacím smrti ve zkoumaných populacích, a kapitola jedenáctá, věnovaná diskusi a důsledkům výzkumných zjištění. Kulturní zásobárna vědění geograficky situovaná na Srí Lance nabízí respondentům jak běžně sdílenou zásobu výkladů světa, vědění "jak to je", tak i širokou paletu způsobů zvládání smrti, v každodenním životě trénovaných a aplikovaných dovedností "jak na to". Aplikované dovednosti společně s účelem jejich praktikování diferencují jednotlivé typy sociálních reprezentací smrti na Srí Lance. Homogenita výkladů "jak to je", dostupnost praktických dovedností "jak na to" a sdílená představa či žitá hodnota transcedence smrti, toho nesmrtelného-Nibbany, jsou těmi aspekty, které diferencují kulturní reprezentace smrti na Srí Lance a v České republice. Závěrečnou tečku tvoří návrh využití výzkumných zjištěných pro změnu stávající praxe nakládání se smrtí v České republice. Vzhledem k tomu, že předmět výzkumu je sledován nejenom v různých sociálních skupinách, ale i ve dvou rozličných kulturách České republiky a Srí Lanky, jsou výsledná zjištění a provedený výzkumný proces transkulturálním ověřením jak principů zakotvené teorie, tak i teorie sociálních reprezentací.

Abstract:

"Skilful living in the present brings a pleasant life in the future". This sentence expresses in short the results of the research that was focused on the social representations of death in the populations of theravada monks and their lay supporters in Sri Lanka. It is a unique example of etnopsychological research in the history of Czech and Slovak psychology. The basic structure of common sense is formed both by an ethical principle: the experiencing is dependent on the acting within dimension of wholesomeunwholesome (pin-pau, sinhala; kusala-akusala, pali), and by a quality of re-becoming (paralo, sinhala; punabbhava, pali) that overlaps the horizon of a particular person's life. And as a part of this common sense, the social representations of death consist of the shared images and practices, that help people to face up to the end. The thesis is divided into eleven chapters. The main stress is placed on methodological and empiric aspect of the work. Theory of social representations is partly described in the first and the third chapter, wholly then in chapter two. It has determined systematical use of grounded theory methodology. Theoretical and methodological framework of the research project is elaborated in the third chapter. In the next chapter the research design is specified, which is proposed not only for the research of mentioned social groups of monks and their lay supporters in Sri Lanka, but also for relevant social groups in the Czech republic (chapter ten). While chapter five can be still considered as a pure methodological one, I elaborate research proceedings formed by repeated research phases here, in the following chapters the systematic pursuing of methodical principles and the empirical inquiry results are spun together. Chapters six, seven and eight focus on particular stages of the research project realization in Sri Lanka. This is the way, how the stable methodological-empiric ground is formed, from which the text crowning chapters grew up, the ninth one, directed to the social representations of death in the inquired populations, and the eleventh one, focused on the discussion and the consequences of research findings. Cultural store of knowledge, geographically situated in Sri Lanka, equipped respondents as well with commonly shared inventory of world explanations, knowledge "how it is", as with broad palette of death coping ways, in the everyday life trained and applied proficiencies of "knowing-how". These applied proficiencies together with the purpose of their practicing differentiate particular types of social representations of death in Sri Lanka. There are three aspects that differentiate cultural representations of death in Sri Lanka from the one in the Czech republic: homogeneity of explanation "how it is", accessibility of practical proficiencies of "knowing-how" and a shared image or a lived value of the death transcendence, that immortal-Nibbana. Final point forms a project of possible application of research findings aimed on the change of the actual practice of death coping in the Czech Republic. Owing to the fact that the research subject is observed not only in different social groups, but also in various cultures of the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka, the final findings as well as the whole research process are transcultural verifications, of both, grounded theory principles and theory of social representations.
