Associations between attachment, rejection sensitivity and conflict management strategies in romantic relationships

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi citovou vazbou, citlivostí vůči odmítnutí a strategiemi zvládání konfliktů v partnerských vztazích. Předpokládala jsem, že citlivost vůči odmítnutí zprostředkuje vztahy úzkostné citové vazby se strategiemi zapojení do konfliktu a vyhýbání. Dále jsem předpokládala, že citlivost vůči odmítnutí zprostředkuje vztahy mezi vyhýbavou vazbou a vyhýbáním se konfliktu a stažením z něj. Výzkumný soubor zahrnoval 87 mužů a 137 žen (průměrně ve věku 21,8 let), kteří buďto aktuálně mají alespoň roční partnerský vztah, nebo s ním mají zkušenost z minulosti. Mediační hypotézy nebyly potvrzeny, podle výsledků výzkumu citlivost vůči odmítnutí nemá jedinečný vztah se styly zvládání konfliktů. Naproti tomu hypotézy ohledně přímého vztahu mezi styly citové vazby a styly zvládání konfliktů byly převážně podpořeny, ačkoli některé jen u jednoho pohlaví. Ukázalo se, že vyhýbavý styl citové vazby negativně souvisí s konstruktivním řešením problému jen u mužů a pozitivně souvisí s vyhýbáním se konfliktům pouze u žen. Úzkostná citová vazba pozitivně souvisela s vyhýbavou strategií u mužů. V souladu s hypotézami dále úzkostná vazba souvisela jak s vyhověním, tak se zapojením do konfliktu a vyhýbavá vazba souvisela se stažením. Nebyl však potvrzen záporný vztah úzkostné vazby s řešením problému.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between anxious and avoidant attachment styles, rejection sensitivity, and conflict management strategies in romantic relationships. It was expected that rejection sensitivity would mediate the relationships between anxious attachment and conflict engagement and avoidance. It was also expected that rejection sensitivity would mediate the relationships between avoidant attachment and conflict avoidance and withdrawal. The sample for this study included 87 men and 137 women (mean age 21, 8 years) who were involved in at least one-year romantic relationship, either past or present. Results failed to provide evidence that rejection sensitivity mediates the relationships between attachment and conflict management strategies, rejection sensitivity did not have a unique effect on strategies of coping with conflict. However, hypotheses concerning the relationships between attachment styles and conflict styles were mostly supported, although some unexpected gender differences emerged. Specifically, avoidant attachment was negatively associated with constructive problem solving only among men and positively associated with avoidant strategy only among women. Anxious attachment was positively associated with avoidant strategy among men. As expected, anxious attachment predicted both compliance and conflict engagement and avoidant attachment predicted withdrawal. Hypothesis that anxious attachment is inversely associated with problem solving was not supported.
