"Battle of Gajda" - Reflection of Gajda's Affair in Národní listy and Lidové noviny

Abstract:

Generál Radola Gajda patřil k nejvýznamnějším československým vojákům. Pro své názory a chování byl rovněž velice kontroverzní postavou. Slavným se stal zejména díky svému působení na východní frontě první světové války, kde jeden čas ovládal prakticky celou Sibiř. V roce 1926 se stal hlavním aktérem politické a mediální aféry, která vedla k jeho odvolání z funkce náčelníka hlavního štábu. Cílem práce je odhalení a popsání mechanismů, které utvářely Gajdův mediální obraz v textech Národních listů a Lidových novin. Výzkumnou metodou je kvalitativní diskursivní analýza definovaná Jamesem Paulem Geem s využitím teorie ideologie od Johna B. Thompsona. Tuto metodu nastíníme v teoretické části práce, v analytické části přistoupíme k samotné analýze vybraných novinových textů.

Abstract:

General Radola Gajda was one of the most important Czechoslovakian soldiers. For his opinions and behaviour he was also a very controversial figure. He became famous espe-cially thanks to his impact in the Eastern Front of the World War I where at one point he practically controlled all of Siberia. In 1926 he became the main participant in the political and medial scandal which led to his removal from the position of the commander of the military staff. The aim of this thesis is a disclosure and description of mechanisms that created Gajda‘s medial image in the texts of the Czech newspapers "Národní listy" and "Lidové noviny". Our research method is qualitative discourse analysis defined by James Paul Gee along with using the theory of ideology by John B. Thompson. We will outline this method in the theoretical part of this work and accede to the very analysis of selected newspaper ar-ticles in its practical part.
