Language learning strategies and learning style preferences in EFL classes

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Strategie učení se jazyku a preference stylu učení se jazykům ve výuce anglického jazyka“ představuje využití strategií učení se jazykům a preference stylu učení se jazykům ve dvou devátých třídách základní školy v Brně. Teoretická část práce vymezuje proces učení včetně učebních kompetencí, motivace a sebeuvědomění/sebereflexe, jsou popsány pojmy strategie učení a preference učebních stylů a je prezentován aktuální výzkum. V praktické části je provedena případová studie za účelem zjištění četnosti používání určitých typů jazykových strategií učení a preferencí učebních stylů ve dvou třídách ve výuce anglického jazyka. Dále je diskutována souvislost mezi strategiemi jazykového vzdělávání a preferencemi stylů jazykového vzdělávání a jsou uvedeny návrhy na zvýšení variability v používání obou strategií a preferencí.

Abstract:

The Diploma thesis “Language learning strategies and learning style preferences in EFL classes” presents the use of language learning strategies and language learning style preferences in two ninth grades of an elementary school in Brno. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the learning process including learning competencies, motivation, and self-awareness/self-reflection, the terms learning strategies and learning style preferences are described and research up to date is presented. In the empirical part of the thesis, a case study is conducted in order to determine the frequency of using certain types of language learning strategies and learning style preferences in two EFL classes. The connection between language learning strategies and language learning style preferences is further discussed and suggestions on increasing the variability in the usage of both strategies and preferences are introduced.
