Analysis of the Art Auction Market in the Czech Republic in 2006–2018

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu aukčních síní s uměním v České republice s důrazem na porozumění souvislostí jevů a chování trhu. Teoretická část práce vymezuje pojmy, procesy a základní principy vztahující se k problematice obchodování s uměním a k činnosti aukčních síní. Praktická část analyzuje vývoj českého aukčního trhu s uměním v letech 2006 až 2018 s cílem utvořit holistický obraz fungování hlavních zákonitostí. Na základě zkoumání situace trhu ve sledovaném období bylo identifikováno vícero vlivů. Jako nejvýznamnější determinant výkonnosti českého aukčního trhu s uměním byly shledány položky v nejvyšším cenovém segmentu, které jsou také hlavní příčinou cyklické fluktuace trhu. Obecně ale dochází k nárůstu trhu a vstupu nových sběratelů a investorů, kteří jsou za výjimečná umělecká díla ochotni zaplatit vyšší částky, čímž dochází k růstu jak průměrných, tak rekordních cen. Přidanou hodnotou práce je vytvoření pohledu na český aukční trh v kontextu delšího časového úseku.

Abstract:

The subject matter of this bachelor thesis is the art auction market in the Czech Republic with an emphasis on understanding the context of the market phenomena and behaviour. The theoretical part of the thesis defines specific terms, processes, and principles related to art trading and the operation of auction houses. The empirical part of the thesis analyses the development of the Czech art auction market in the years 2006 to 2018. The aim is to create a holistic picture of the functioning of the main regularities of the market. Multiple effects influencing the market were recognized. Items in the highest price segment were identified as the major determinant of the performance of the art auction market. These items are also the driving factor of the market cyclicality. In general, growth of the market occurs as new collectors and investors, who are willing to spend significant sums on unique works of art, enter the market causing the average and record prices to grow. The added value of the thesis lies in the creation of a holistic picture of the Czech art auction market in the context of a longer period of time.
