Factors Influencing the Growth/Stagnation of European Economies

Abstract:

Hartmann, R. Faktory ovlivňující růst/stagnaci evropských ekonomik. Diplomová práce. Brno: Mendelova univerzita v Brně, 2025. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na identifikaci a analýzu klíčových faktorů, které ovlivňují ekonomický růst evropských států v období let 2000 až 2023. Hlavním cílem je posoudit význam vybraných makroekonomických a mikroekonomických ukazatelů a jejich vzájemné vztahy s růstem HDP. V teoretické části jsou definovány čtyři hlavní oblasti determinantů růstu: finanční ukazatele, vládní faktory, ukazatele lidského kapitálu a firemní faktory. Na základě těchto kategorií jsou formulovány tři výzkumné hypotézy zaměřené na vliv výdajů na výzkum a vývoj, přímých zahraničních investic a výdajů na vzdělávání. V analytické části byla provedena korelační a vícerozměrná regresní analýza, která potvrdila význam některých faktorů, zejména přílivu přímých zahraničních investic, kvality kapitálového trhu, míry nezaměstnanosti či investic do zdravotnictví. Výsledky ukázaly, že zatímco některé proměnné vykazují stabilní a statisticky významný vliv na růst HDP, jiné – například výdaje na vzdělávání či výzkum a vývoj – se v komplexnějších modelech ukázaly být méně robustní. Zjištění této práce mohou přispět k hlubšímu porozumění faktorům ekonomického růstu v evropském kontextu a nabídnout praktická doporučení pro tvorbu hospodářských politik na úrovni národních vlád i evropských institucí.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors influencing the economic growth of European countries during the period from 2000 to 2023. The primary objective is to assess the significance of selected macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators and their interrelations with GDP growth. The theoretical part defines four main categories of growth determinants: financial indicators, government factors, human capital indicators, and firm-level factors. Based on these categories, three research hypotheses are formulated, focusing on the effects of expenditure on research and development, foreign direct investment, and education spending. The analytical part employs correlation and multivariate regression analysis, which confirmed the significance of certain factors - particularly the inflow of foreign direct investment, the quality of the capital market, the unemployment rate, and investment in healthcare. The results indicate that while some variables exhibit a stable and statistically significant effect on GDP growth, others - such as education and R&D expenditure - proved to be less robust in more complex models. The findings of this thesis may contribute to a deeper understanding of the drivers of economic growth within the European context and offer practical recommendations for economic policymaking at both national and European institutional levels.
