Community supported agriculture - a case study from the Czech Republic and Sweden

Abstract:

Tato případová studie se zabývala analýzou a porovnáním modelu community supported agriculture (CSA) v Česku a ve Švédsku. Cílem této práce je porozumět struktuře, fungování CSA, zachytit odlišnosti každé farmy ve stylu komunikace, hospodaření a řízení CSA. První CSA farmy se v obou zemích objevily před více než 15 lety a od té doby se jejich počet zněkolikanásobil až na současných 100 CSA farem ve Švédsku a 35 v Česku. Švédská organizace podporující a zaštiťující CSA v zemi se jmenuje Andelsjordbruk, zatímco v Česku tuto roli plní AMPI prostřednictvím KPZkoALICE. Literární rešerše se zaměřuje na definování CSA a historický vývoj modelu až po současnost v obou studovaných zemích. Zároveň jsou v této části popsány další alternativní formy podpory lokálních producentů (Scuk, REKO-ringar), které nabývají stále větší obliby. Praktická část přináší pohled do začátků, vývoje, fungování a financování čtyř CSA farem – Bondbönorna i Torsåker, Alsike Trädgård, Kurkovy bedýnky a Mezi poli. Během rozhovorů s farmáři byla popisována úskalí spojená s vedením CSA, názory na současné pěstování a prodej potravin přes sítě supermarketů, v rámci působení na farmách bylo možné zažít rozmanitost životního stylu každého majitele. Diplomová práce je první studií na českém vědeckém poli porovnávající CSA model v Česku a Švédsku. Její hodnota spočívá v přinesení nových informací o fungování CSA ve Švédsku, což může vést k lepšímu porozumění potenciálu CSA v kontextech různých národů. Studie poskytuje základ pro navazující výzkumy v této oblasti.

Abstract:

This case study analysed and compared the community supported agriculture (CSA) model in the Czech Republic and Sweden. The aim of this work is to understand the structure, functioning of CSA, capturing the differences of each farm in the communication style, management and operation of each CSA. The first CSA farms appeared in both countries more than 15 years ago and since then, their numbers have multiplied to the current 100 CSA farms in Sweden and 35 in the Czech Republic. The Swedish organisation supporting and advocating CSA in the country is called Andelsjordbruk, while in the Czech Republic this role is fulfilled by AMPI through KPZkoALICE. The literature review focuses on the definition of CSA and the historical development of the model up to the present in both studied countries. Additionally, this section describes other alternative forms of support for local producers (Scuk, REKO-ringar) that are becoming more and more popular. The practical part provides an insight into the beginnings, development, functioning and financing of four CSA farms - Bondbönorna i Torsåker, Alsike Trädgård, Kurkovy bedýnky and Mezi poli. During the interviews with the farmers, the challenges associated with running a CSA were described, views on contemporary growing and selling food through supermarket chains, and the diversity of each owner's lifestyle could be experienced during visits on the farms. The diploma thesis is the first study in the Czech scientific field comparing the CSA model in the Czech Republic and Sweden. Its value lies in bringing new information about the functioning of CSA in Sweden, which may lead to a better understanding of the potential of CSA in different national contexts. The study provides a basis for further research in this area.
