Twitter as an activist platform in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje Twitter, který je zkoumán v kontextu aktivismu v České republice jakožto jeden z nástrojů užívaný k aktivitám usilujícím o společenské změny. Teoreticky vychází z konceptu online aktivismu a jeho forem, zohledňuje také některé dosavadní výzkumy Twitteru. Výzkumné otázky se zaměřují na uživatele Twitteru z řad českého neziskového sektoru. Jejich cílem je zjistit, proč si ke svým aktivitám vybrali Twitter, k čemu ho užívají a jakou hraje roli v jejich celkové komunikační strategii. Práce zkoumá také vztah Facebooku a Twitteru a snaží se definovat, jaký postoj k nim čeští aktivisté zaujímají a kterou z těchto online sociálních sítí preferují. Prostřednictvím kvalitativního výzkumu a metody zakotvené teorie je v empirické části práce analyzováno deset polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Výsledky analýzy jsou následně prezentovány v diskusi, v jejímž rámci jsou také konfrontovány s teoretickými tezemi sumarizovanými v předchozích kapitolách.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is focused on Twitter. It is examined in the context of the activism in the Czech Republic as one of the platforms used for activities aiming at social change. The theoretical background is based on the concept of online activism and its different forms. Some previous research works on Twitter are also taken into account. Research questions focus on the users of Twitter from the area of the Czech non-profit sector. The aim is first to find out the reasons for choosing Twitter; second to define users´ activities on Twitter and third to assess the role Twitter plays in their overall communication strategy. The thesis also examines the relationship of Facebook and Twitter and tries to define the position of the Czech activists towards both of the tools along with their preferences. By using the qualitative research and grounded theory, ten semi-structured interviews are analyzed in the empirical part of the work. Results of the analysis are subsequently presented in the discussion. In its framework, these results are also confronted with the theoretical arguments summarized in the previous chapters.
