The Jewish Question in Czech Society after 1945

Abstract:

V diplomové práci se pokusím vyložit vybrané otázky, které se týkají proměn postavení a vnímání problematiky židovského etnika v českých zemích se zaměřením na období po roce 1945. Práce bude psána s cílem zmapovat důvody, pro které je fenomén holocaustu natolik živý i v současné době, že je potřeba se jím neustále v humanitních a společenských vědách zabývat. Práce bude rozdělena do tří chronologicky vymezených částí. V úvodní části se pokusím vysvětlit postavení i kulturní zakotvení židovského obyvatelstva v české společnosti za první Československé republiky a dramatickou proměnu v postavení Židů s tragickým vyzněním v letech nacistické okupace a druhé světové války. Zaměřím se například na postoje T. G. Masaryka vůči židovské komunitě, též uvedu názory některých osobností veřejného a kulturního života, které otevřeně odmítaly antisemitismus v období druhé republiky. Pokusím se osvětlit, zda a proč se případně měnily postoje uvnitř české protektorátní společnosti k židovské otázce. Za stěžejní a klíčovou pokládám druhou část diplomové práce. Zde se budu věnovat postojům k židovské problematice a vůbec k postavení Židů ze strany poválečné politické reprezentace. Budu se zabývat i tím, jakou odezvu vyvolávala v poválečné české společnosti tragédie holocaustu. Připomenu problematiku poválečných restitucí židovského majetku a též se zaměřím na projevy antisemitismu po roce 1945. Třetí část je věnována proměnám postavení Židů v českých zemích po únoru 1948, a to i v souvislosti s mezinárodními poválečnými proměnami. Základním východiskem pro zpracování diplomové práce bude studium vybrané odborné literatury, vydaných pamětí a svědectví, které se pokusím doplnit o studium dobového tisku a odborných tištěných pramenů z knihoven či z vybraných muzejních a archivních fondů.

Abstract:

The thesis explains the questions concerning the changes in the position and perception of the issue of Jewish ethnicity in the Czech lands, focusing on the period after 1945. The thesis is written in order to find out the reasons why the phenomenon of the Holocaust is so alive even today that it has to be constantly dealt with in social sciences. The thesis is divided into three chronologically defined parts. In the introductory part the thesis shows the position and cultural anchoring of the Jewish population in Czech society during the First Czechoslovak Republic and the dramatic change in the position of Jews in the years of Nazi occupation and World War II. The thesis also deals with the attitudes of T. G. Masaryk towards the Jewish community. The thesis tries to clarify whether and why the attitudes within the Czech Protectorate society to the Jewish question changed. Crucial and key is the second part of the thesis. It is devoted to attitudes to the Jewish issue and to the attitude of the post-war political representation towards the position of Jews. The work focused on the response to the Holocaust tragedy of Jews in postwar Czech society. The thesis also discusses the issue of postwar restitution of Jewish property and also deals with manifestations of anti-Semitism after 1945. The third part concerns changes in the position of Jews in the Czech lands after February 1948, also in connection with international postwar changes. The basic starting point for elaboration of this diploma thesis is the study of specialised literature, published memoirs and testimonies, which are supplemented by the study of period print and professional printed sources from libraries or from selected museum and archive collections.
