A Comparison of the Genocide in Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina from a Gender Perspective

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá komparací genocid ve Rwandě a v Bosně a Hercegovině z pohledu genderu. Cílem práce je zodpovědět, jak ovlivnil gender genocidy ve Rwandě a v Bosně a Hercegovině, jakou roli v těchto genocidách hrály ženy, jakou muži a jestli je mezi těmito genocidami rozdíl, případně jaký. Oběti i pachatelé byli na obou stranách genderového rozdělení. Rwandská genocida se vyznačovala velkou angažovaností žen, naopak bosenská genocida byla příkladem genderově selektivního zabíjení mužů v bojovém věku. Gender byl ve rwandském konfliktu využíván k vyhlazování tutsijského etnika prostřednictvím znásilňování žen, v Bosně a Hercegovině byl prostřednictvím předávání srbské identity používán k etnickému vyčistění území od bosenských muslimů a Chorvatů. Muži byli převážně ti, kdo páchali násilnosti a vraždili příslušníky jiných etnik, ale také byli v obou konfliktech sexuálně zneužíváni a jinak mučeni.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with a comparison of the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina from the perspective of gender. The aim of the thesis is to find an answer to how gender influenced these genocides; what role women and men played from the perspective of both victims and perpetrators; and what the differences and similarities between these genocides were. There were victims and perpetrators on both sides of the gender divide. The Rwandan genocide was characterised by a great involvement of women, while the Bosnian genocide was an example of gender-selective killing of men of fighting age. In the Rwandan conflict, gender was used to exterminate the Tutsi ethnicity through the rape of women, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina it was used through the transfer of Serbian identity to cleanse the territory of Bosnian Muslims and Croats. It was mostly the men, who committed violence and killed members of other ethnicities, but they were also the victims of sexual abuse and other forms of torture in both conflicts.
