International non-governmental organizations: The use of the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in the fight against fast fashion

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá nevládními organizacemi obhajujícími práva pracovníků „fast fashion“. Práce je zaměřena konkrétně na aktivitu organizace Clean Clothes Campaign po zřícení oděvní továrny Rana Plaza. Při zřícení budovy Rana Plaza přišlo o život přes tisíc pracovníků a někteří přeživší, stejně tak i rodiny pozůstalých se potýkají s následky katastrofy dodnes. V práci podléhají analýze nástroje využité v kampaních organizace Clean Clothes Campaign „Pay Up!“ a Sign The Accord“. Nástroje kampaní jsou nejprve zkoumány samostatně, poté jsou použité nástroje postaveny proti sobě a je vyhodnocena jejich odlišnost. V kampaních se hodnotí zejména využívání zřícení budovy Rana Plaza k obhajování práv pracovníků „fast fashion“. Zajímavým aspektem analýzy je fakt, že kampaně byly organizovány řadu let po sobě. Kampaň „Pay Up!“ vznikla krátce po neštěstí, zatímco kampaň „Sign The Accord“ je aktuální. Z provedené analýzy vyplývá, že využívání neštěstí, které se odehrálo v jedné z bangladéšských oděvních továren, je stále v kampaních obhajující práva pracovníků oděvního průmyslu hojně využíváno.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with non-governmental organizations defending the rights of “fast fashion” workers. It focuses on the activity of the Clean Clothes Campaign organization after the collapse of the Rana Plaza clothing factory. Over a thousand workers lost their lives in the collapse of the Rana Plaza building. The survivors and the victims’ families are still dealing with the consequences of the disaster to this day. The tools that were used in two Clean Clothes Campaign campaigns “Pay Up!” and “Sign The Accord” are analyzed in the thesis. At first, the campaign tools are analyzed separately, then the thesis focuses on their differences. In the campaigns, the use of the collapse of the Rana Plaza building to defend the rights of “fast fashion” workers, is evaluated. An interesting aspect of the analysis is the fact that the campaigns were organized several years apart from each other. The “Pay Up” campaign was created not long after the disaster, while the “Sign The Accord” campaign is recent. The carried-out analysis shows that the use of the accident, that took place in one of the Bangladeshi garment factories, is still involved in campaigns defending the rights of workers in the garment industry.
