Mass Spectrometry - LDI QIT TOF Mass Spectrometry of Ge-based Chalcogenide Glasses

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá studiem vybraných chalkogenidových skel různého složení na bázi germania pomocí hmotnostní spektrometrie s laserovou desorpcí a ionizací a s použitím kvadrupólové iontové pasti a analyzátoru doby letu (LDI QIT TOF MS). Struktura skel dosud není známa a cílem této studie bylo zhodnotit možnosti a hranice LDI QIT TOF MS pro osvětlení struktury skel. Konkrétně byly studovány tři různé systémy chalkogenidových skel: Ge-As-Te, Ge-As-Se a Ge-Sb-Se. Skla byla syntetizována pomocí fúze při vysoké teplotě a v inertní atmosféře. Za použití LDI s pulzním dusíkovým laserem o vlnové délce 337 nm byly detegovány a analyzovány klastry vytvořené v plynné fázi. Stechiometrie klastrů byla stanovena pomocí analýzy izotopové obálky a počítačového modelování. V případě Ge-As-Te skla bylo analyzováno šest skel o různém složení a odpovídajících tenkých filmů připravených pulzní laserovou depozicí (PLD). Celkem bylo detegováno 29 klastrů obecného složení GeaAsbTec+/- (o jednotkovém náboji) a to buď v pozitivním anebo v negativním iontovém módu. Podobně byly analyzovány Ge-As-Se skla různého složení, přičemž celkově bylo identifikováno 38 GeaAsbSec+/- klastrů a ve třetím případě bylo u sedmi Ge-Sb-Se skel o různém složení identifikováno celkem 37 GeaSbbSec+/- klastrů. Studie hmotnostní spektrometrie byla doplněna Ramanovou spektroskopií za účelem charakterizace skel. Byla analyzována relace Ramanových spekter se stechiometrií klastrů určených hmotnostní spektrometrii. Například strukturní fragmenty jako AsTe3, GeSe4 a AsSe3, atd. jsou indikovány jak Ramanovou spektroskopií tak také i LDI QIT TOF MS. Na závěr, i když laserová desorpční ionizace skel je destruktivní technikou, je předpokládáno, že klastry jsou různé fragmenty původní struktury skla. Výsledky mohou pomoci při pochopení základních strukturních vzorců skel a mohou být užitečné při vývoji nových materiálů.

Abstract:

This Thesis deals with Laser Desorption Ionisation Quadrupole Ion Trap Timeof-Flight Mass Spectrometry (LDI QIT TOF MS) study of selected germanium-based chalcogenide glasses of different composition. The structure of the glasses is still not completely known and the aim of the study is to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of LDI QIT TOF MS to help elucidate the structure of the glasses. Three different chalcogenide glass systems were studied, namely Ge-As-Te, Ge-As-Se, and Ge-Sb-Se. The glasses were synthetized via fusing at high temperature and in inert atmosphere. Clusters formed in gas phase using LDI with pulsed nitrogen laser of 337 nm were detected and analysed. The clusters stoichiometry was determined via analysing isotopic patterns and computer modelling. In case of Ge-As-Te glass, six bulk glasses with varied composition of the elements and corresponding thin films prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) were followed. Totally, singly charged 29 clusters of general composition GeaAsbTec+/- were detected either in positive or in negative ion mode. Similarly, Ge-As-Se glasses of varied composition were analysed, where totally 38 GeaAsbSec+/- clusters were identified. In the third case, for seven varied compositions of Ge-Sb-Se glasses, 37 GeaSbbSec+/- clusters were identified in total. Mass spectrometric study was supplemented by characterization of the glasses by Raman spectroscopy. Relation of Raman spectra with clusters stoichiometries determined by mass spectrometry was analysed, too. For example, structural fragments such as AsTe3, GeSe4, AsSe3, etc. are indicated by both Raman spectroscopy and LDI QIT TOF MS. In conclusion, even though laser desorption ionisation of glasses is a destructive technique, it is assumed that the clusters are various fragments of the original glass structure. The results of this Thesis might help in understanding of the basic structural patterns of the glasses and they can be useful for development of new materials.
