Learning strategies of secondary school EFL learners during in-person learning and distance learning

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá výběrem učebních strategií žáků 2. stupně ve výuce anglického jazyka. Konkrétně se zajímá o to, jestli distanční forma výuky měla vliv na to, jaké učební strategie žáci uplatňují. V teoretické části vymezuje rozdíly mezi učebním stylem a strategiemi, poskytuje typologii učebních strategií z pohledu několika odborníků a vyjmenovává nejčastější faktory, které ovlivňují výběr učebních strategií. Dále popisuje průběh distanční výuky angličtiny na FZŠ České mládeže v Ústí nad Labem a seznamuje čtenáře s výzkumnými skupinami. V praktické části práce dotazníková šetření sbírají data o tom, jaké strategie žáci používali doma během distanční výuky, a jaké používají ve výuce prezenčního typu. Následně jsou data porovnána. V závěru práce jsou vedle výsledků výzkumu zmíněny i způsoby využití nových poznatků.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the selection of learning strategies of secondary school pupils in English classes. More specifically, it is focused on whether the distance form of education had any effect on which strategies EFL learners use. The theoretical part of this thesis delineates the differences between a learning style and a learning strategy, it provides readers with the typology of different learning strategies based on the view of various experts of the field and lists the most common factors which influence the choice of a learning strategy. It also describes how English classes were taught at the FZŠ České mládeže in Ústí nad Labem during the lockdown and it introduces the observed groups. In the practical part data is collected using a questionnare construction. The questionnares examine which strategies were used by pupils at home, and which were used at school. In the next part the collected data is compared. Several ways of how to utilize the findings of this thesis in EFL teaching are proposed at the conclusion
