The Rise of Right-wing Populist Sverigedemokraterna: The Possible Factors Explaining the Electoral Success in 2014

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá nárůstem volební podpory pro Švédské demokraty (Sverigedemokraterna) v komunálních volbách (Kommunfullmäktigeval) v roce 2014. Hlavním cílem je zjistit, zda některý ze zkoumaných faktorů (nezaměstnanost, nízké vzdělání, kriminalita, přistěhovalectví a euroskepticismus) vykazují vysokou spojitost se švédskými komunami, ve kterých SD obdržela vysokou volební podporu. Tohoto cíle bude dosaženo prostřednictvím porovnání chování proměnných s komunálními volbami konanými v roce 2002, ve kterých volební podpora pro SD byla stále relativně nízká. Práce si klade za cíl odpovědět na následující otázky: Chovají se zkoumané nezávislé proměnné stejným způsobem v obou obdobích? Pokud ne, která z nezávislých proměnných vykazuje statisticky významné důkazy, které vysvětlují zvýšení volební podpory pro SD? Hypotézou je, že komuny s a vysokou mírou nízkého vzdělání, kriminality, nezaměstnanosti, euroskepticismu a přistěhovalectví vykazují vysokou volební podporou pro SD. Použito bude zejména kvantitativní metody, kdy bude provedena vícenásobná regresní analýza studující všech 290 švédských komun.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the increase of electoral support for the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) in the municipal elections (Kommunfullmäktigeval) in 2014. The main aim is to detect if any of the examined factors (unemployment, low education, criminality, immigration and euro-scepticism) indicate high association with the Sweden's municipalities (kommuner) in which SD received high electoral support. This objective is going to be accomplished through a comparison of the variables' behavior during the municipal elections held in 2002, in which SD's electoral support was still remaining low. The thesis aims to answer the following questions: Do the examined independent variables behave the same way in both periods? If not, which of the independent variables show statistically significant evidence that explains the increase of the electoral support for SD? The hypothesis is that municipalities with high percentage of unemployment, low level of education, high crime rate, high percentage of euro-scepticism and high rate of foreign-born show high electoral support for SD. Mainly the quantitative method is going to be conducted by using the multiple regression analysis.
