Jungian shadow archetype in contemporary western cinema

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o formální a obsahové podobě jungiánského archetypu stínu vsoučasné západní kinematografii. V úvodních kapitolách vysvětluje základní konceptyanalytické psychologie, která bude použita jako hlavní metoda pro analýzu filmů Klub rváčů,Hra, Černá labuť a Král rybář. Z rozboru vyplývá, že za každým příběhem se nacházejíarchetypální obsahy, ať už s nimi tvůrce pracuje záměrně, či nikoliv. Tyto obsahy jsou podlejungiánů příčinou emocionální reakce diváka, kdykoliv není schopen přesně určit její původ.Mohou být vyjádřeny buď přímo ? tedy jejich personifikací do filmové postavy, jejížnuminozita je podpořena filmovou řečí, nebo nepřímo - pouze příběhovými elementy afunkcemi, které zaujímají jednotlivé postavy. Oběma možnostmi se tato práce zabývápodrobně. Rozebírá formální prostředky, kterými jednotlivé filmy vyjadřují psychickoupodstatu svých elementů. Z hlediska struktury filmu definuje tři fáze vztahu archetyp stínuhrdina,které volně odpovídají tří aktové struktuře filmu. Každá má svoje specifika, která jsoupřítomna ve všech vybraných filmech. Dále se zabývá funkcí archetypu stínu nejen vevyprávění, ale také v psychologii člověka, a zpětně uvádí získané poznatky do kontextujungiánských koncepcí. Cílem není vytvoření komplexního systému, ale spíše nastínění jednéz možností, jak lze o filmu a filmové řeči přemýšlet.

Abstract:

The main topic of this diploma thesis is the form and content of jungian shadow archetype incontemporary western cinema. In the first chapters it introduces the basic concepts ofanalytical psychology, which will be used as the principal method for analysis of the selectedfilms (Fight Club, Game, Black Swan, Fisher King). The key concept is that in the core of eachstory are hidden archetypal contents. According to jungians these are the main force behindemotional response of audience. In films they can be portrayed either directly ? bypersonification into a film characters whose numinosity is supported by film language ? orindirectly ? by narrative elements and character's functions. The thesis concentrates on bothoptions and analyzes formal means which express psychic nature of the selected film'selements. It defines three phases of ego-shadow relationship which are vaguely similar tothree acts structure. It examines shadow archetype's function in the story and in humanpsychology as well. The results are put into context of jungian concepts. Rather than creatinga complex system, the thesis outlines another option how to think about film and filmlanguage, which is deeply rooted in human psychology.
