Tayeb Salih's Quest for Liberation: Season of Migration to the North as a Postcolonial Rewriting

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl analyzovat román Tayeba Saliha Sezóna migrace na sever (1969) jako postkoloniální přepis. Román je považován za přepis hlavních textů jako je Srdce temnoty Josepha Conrada a Othello Williama Shakespeara. Kromě toho se tento román zmiňuje o dalších textech, jako jsou příběhy arabských nocí. Mustafa Sa'eed, který je hlavním protagonistou Saliha, je postava podobná Kurtzovi ze Srdce temnoty. Mustafa Sa'eed jako africký muž se zabývá sexuálními styky s britskými ženami, které jsou metaforicky považovány za dcery královny Viktorie. Jinými slovy, prostřednictvím postavy Mustafa Sa'eed Tayeb Salih nechává tuto postavu na misi napadnout každý anglický domov a znásilnit každou ženu a dceru jako odplatu za evropské znásilnění Afriky. Hlavním tématem románu je interakce mezi Východem a Západem. První kapitola podává historické pozadí posedlosti Evropy východem, hlavně Afrikou jako "temným kontinentem". Tayeb Salih navíc spojuje významné události v historii evropského kolonialismu v arabském světě s Mustafovým životem. Jsou to například bitva o Omdurman a dohoda Sykes-Picot a nakonec Dárfúrská Deklarace. Druhá kapitola analyzuje charakter Mustafy Sa'eeda a jeho zvláštní volbu odvety, která používá jeho penis. Analyzuje také jeho interakce se čtyřmi ušlechtilými ženami, zejména Ann, Isabella, Sheila a Jean. A konečně třetí kapitola pojednává o charakteru Hosny. Stejně jako její první manžel Mustafa, Hosna má svou vlastní vnitřní bitvu, která je proti represivnímu Súdánskému kmenovému systému. Poté, co Mustafa zemře, je Hosna nucena se znovu vdát. Nakonec však zabije svého druhého starého manžela, který se ji pokusí znásilnit, a poté spáchá sebevraždu. Tayeb Salih se snaží předvést, jak se dopad kolonialismu rozšiřuje na rodinný systém a v důsledku toho utlačuje ženy.

Abstract:

The thesis aims at analyzing Tayeb Salih’s novel Season of Migration to the North (1969) as a postcolonial rewriting. The novel is considered a rewriting of main texts such as Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and William Shakespeare’s Othello. Furthermore, this novel alludes to other texts such as the Arabian Nights tales. Mustafa Sa’eed, who is Salih’s main protagonist, is a Kurtz-like figure from Heart of Darkness. Mustafa Sa’eed as an African man engages in sexual liaisons with British women, who are metaphorically considered daughters of Queen Victoria. In other words, through the figure of Mustafa Sa’eed, Tayeb Salih employs this character on a mission to invade every English home and rape every woman and daughter in retribution for European’s rape of Africa. The novel’s main theme is the interaction between the East and West. The first chapter gives historical background on Europe’s obsession with the East mainly Africa as the “Dark Continent.” In addition, Tayeb Salih connects major events in the history of European colonialism in the Arab world with Mustafa’s life such as the Battle of Omdurman, The Sykes-Picot Agreement and finally Darfur Declaration. The Second chapter analyzes the character of Mustafa Sa’eed and his peculiar choice of retaliation, which is using his penis. It also analyzes his interactions with four noble women notably Ann, Isabella, Sheila and Jean. And finally, the third chapter discusses the character of Hosna. Like her first husband Mustafa, Hosna has her own internal battle which is against the oppressive Sudanese tribal system. After Mustafa dies, Hosna is forced to remarry. But she eventually kills her second old husband who attempts to rape her and then commits suicide. Tayeb Salih tries to showcase how the impact of colonialism extends to the familial system and oppresses women as a result.
