Success of UK Independence Party and the salience of European Union and immigration issues in Great Britain

Anotácia:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá významností témat Evropské Unie a imigrace ve Velké Británii. Cílem je zjistit, jaký prostor věnují daným tématům relevantní politické strany (UKIP, Konzervativní strana a Labouristická strana) a jaký postoj vůči nim zastávají. Teoreticky se práce opírá o koncepty tematického vlastnictví, významnosti tématu a teorii soutěže mezi mainstreamovými stranami a stranami niky. Pomocí kódovacího schématu výzkumné skupiny Comparative Manifesto Project je provedena obsahová analýza volebních programů pro volby do Dolní sněmovny parlamentu v letech 2010 a 2015. Obsahová analýza umožňuje zjistit, jaký prostor v programech strany tématům Evropské Unie a imigrace věnovaly a nakolik pro ně byla salientní ve srovnání s ostatními tématy v programu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the salience of the European Union and immigration issues in Great Britain. The aim is to identify the space devoted to given issues by all relevant political parties (UKIP, The Conservative Party, The Labour Party) and their attitudes towards them. Theoretical part of the thesis is based on concepts of issue ownership, issue salience and the theory of competition between mainstream and niche parties. The content analysis of party manifestos for general elections in 2010 and 2015 is performed using the coding scheme of Comparative Manifesto Project research group. The content analysis allows us to determine what space parties devoted to issues of the European Union and immigration and how salient these were compared to other issues in their manifestos.
