Physical activity as an influencing factor of burnout syndrome in nurses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkoumáním prevalence syndromu vyhoření mezi zdravotními sestrami v Moravskoslezském kraji a potenciálním vlivem pohybové aktivity na tento fenomén. Cílem studie je analyzovat asociaci mezi úrovní pohybové aktivity a projevy syndromu vyhoření. V teoretické části jsou podrobně prozkoumány definice, faktory a symptomy syndromu vyhoření, jakož i význam pohybové aktivity pro psychickou pohodu. Pro praktickou část byl realizován kvantitativní výzkum prostřednictvím anonymního dotazníkového šetření v programu Qualtrics ve vybraných nemocnicích Moravskoslezského kraje, s daty sbíranými v lednu a únoru 2024. Z celkového počtu 216 respondentů, z nichž téměř 92 % tvořily ženy, bylo 16 odpovědí vyřazeno kvůli neúplnosti. Výzkum využíval dva standardizované distribuované elektronické dotazníky: Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) pro měření projevů syndromu vyhoření a dotazník na pohybovou aktivitu, který byl vyhodnocen dvěma metodami - podle Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (LTEQ) a podle kritérií Světové zdravotnické organizace (WHO). Analýza dat byla provedena pomocí lineární regrese v softwaru R, což umožnilo kvantifikovat vztah mezi pohybovou aktivitou a syndromem vyhoření. Přes rozšířenou prevalenci syndromu vyhoření mezi zkoumanými zdravotními sestrami, se neprokázala statisticky významná souvislost mezi úrovní pohybové aktivity a syndromem vyhoření. Tato zjištění naznačují, že i když pohybová aktivita může mít obecně pozitivní vliv na psychickou pohodu, její specifická role v prevenci syndromu vyhoření vyžaduje další zkoumání. V závěru práce jsou diskutovány dopady těchto výsledků na praxi a jsou navržena doporučení pro podporu duševního zdraví zdravotníků v pracovním prostředí.

Abstract:

The thesis investigates the prevalence of burnout syndrome among nurses in the Moravian-Silesian region and the potential impact of physical activity on this phenomenon. The study aims to analyze the association between the level of physical activity and the manifestations of burnout syndrome. In the theoretical part, the definitions, factors, and symptoms of burnout syndrome, as well as the importance of physical activity for psychological well-being are examined in detail. For the practical part, quantitative research was conducted through an anonymous Qualtrics questionnaire survey in selected hospitals in the Moravian-Silesian region, with data collected in January and February 2024. Out of a total of 216 respondents, almost 92 % of whom were women, 16 responses were discarded due to incompleteness. The research used two standardized distributed electronic questionnaires: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to measure the manifestations of burnout syndrome and a physical activity questionnaire, which was assessed by two methods - the Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (LTEQ) and the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Data analysis was performed using linear regression in R software, which allowed quantifying the relationship between physical activity and burnout syndrome. Despite the widespread prevalence of burnout syndrome among the nurses studied, there was no statistically significant association between the level of physical activity and burnout syndrome. These findings suggest that although physical activity may have a positive effect on psychological well-being in general, its specific role in the prevention of burnout syndrome requires further investigation. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of these results for practice and suggests recommendations for promoting the mental health of healthcare professionals in the work environment.
