The association between selected family environment factors and excessive internet use in adolescents

Abstract:

Cílem této studie bylo ověřit vztahy mezi vybranými faktory rodinného prostředí a excesivním užíváním internetu (EUI) u adolescentů. Kromě vlivů rodičovské péče, rodičovské kontroly, monitoringu, komunikace s rodiči a sociální opory ze strany rodičů se studie zaměřovala také na vliv sociální opory vrstevníků na míru EUI. Práce je založena na sekundární analýze dat z mezinárodního průzkumu Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC), který byl realizován v letech 2013/2014 na Slovensku. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 2617 adolescentů (1360 dívek, 1257 chlapců) ve věku 10-17 let. Data byla sbírána formou sebeposuzovacích dotazníků na 130 základních školách a osmiletých gymnáziích. Výsledky ukázaly, že rodičovská péče, monitoring a sociální opora rodiny predikují nižší míru EUI, zatímco rodičovská kontrola predikuje vyšší míru EUI u adolescentů. Sociální opora vrstevníků a komunikace s rodiči se neukázaly být statisticky významnými prediktory EUI. Dále bylo zjištěno, že tendence k EUI se mírně zvyšuje s věkem, ale nebyl nalezen signifikantní rozdíl v její míře mezi chlapci a dívkami. Výsledky a jejich možné implikace do praxe jsou diskutovány v kontextu předešlých empirických zjištění.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between selected family environment factors and excessive internet use in adolescence. In addition to the effects of parental care, parental control, monitoring, parental communication and social support from family, the study also focused on the influence of social support from peers on EUI. The study is based on secondary analysis of data from international survey Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC), which was realized in years 2013/2014 in Slovakia. The sample consisted of 2617 adolescents (1360 girls, 1257 boys) aged 10-17. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires at 130 elementary and grammar schools. The results showed, that parental care, monitoring and social support from family predict a lower extent of EUI, while parental control predicts a higher extent of EUI in adolescence. Social support from peers and parental communication did not appear to be statistically signifiant predictors of EUI. Also it was found, that tendency to EUI slightly increases with age, but there was not significant difference in EUI between boys and girls. The results and their possible practical implications are discussed in the context of previous empirical findings.
