Abstract:

Táto práca analyzuje tri anglické prídavné mená: odd, strange, weird. Jej hlavným cieľom je rozlíšenie rozdielov v použití daných prídavných mien v každodennom živote. Analýza sa opiera o údaje získané z Britského národného korpusu a Korpusu súčasnej americkej angličtiny. Práca sa skladá z dvoch častí. Teoretická časť približuje kľúčové teoretické pojmy: význam, synonýmia, kolokácia, korpusová lingvistika, a predstavuje terminológiu použitú v práci. Analytická časť uvádza definície slovníkov a analyzuje ich, nasledované dôkladnou analýzou korpusových údajov s primárnym zameraním na najčastejšie kolokácie skúmaných lexém a kontextov, v ktorých sa tieto kolokácie vyskytujú. Z analýzy vyplýva, že prídavné mená sa podstatne líšia v ich použití, ako aj vo formálnosti a intenzite, adjektívum odd je najformálnejšie a najmenej intenzívne, zatiaľ čo weird je najmenej formálne a najintenzívnejšie.

Abstract:

This thesis provides an analysis of three adjectives: odd, strange, weird. The main purpose is the distinction of the discrepancies between the uses of the adjectives in everyday life. The analysis relies on data gathered from the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The thesis is comprised of two parts. The theoretical part establishes the background, namely the concepts of meaning, synonymy, collocation, corpus linguistics, and the terminology used throughout the thesis. The analytical part lists dictionary definitions and analyses them, followed by an exhaustive analysis of corpus data, with the primary focus maintained on the most frequent collocations of the studied lexemes and the contexts in which they occur. The analysis reveals that the adjectives differ in usage considerably, as well as in formality and intensity, odd being the most formal and the least intense, weird being the least formal and the most intense.
