The most used English textbooks for the 5th year of primary school from the perspective of teachers

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá názory českých učitelů a rodilých mluvčích na nejpoužívanější učebnice anglického jazyka pro 5. ročník na brněnských základních školách. Cílem bylo prozkoumat způsoby práce s vybranou učebnicí, ale také zjistit, proč si ji učitelé vybrali jako hlavní didaktický prostředek do výuky. Zjišťovali jsme také, co respondentům v učebnicích chybí a jakými aspekty by je obohatili. Práce je členěna na dvě části – teoretickou a empirickou. Teoretická část obsahuje vysvětlení nejdůležitějších pojmů a objasnění dalších souvislostí vztahujících se k tématu výzkumu jako například struktura a funkce učebnic, metody jejich výzkumu v historii i současnosti a způsoby práce učitelů a žáků s učebnicemi. V úvodu empirické části je představen cíl předvýzkumu včetně jeho výsledků. Dále jsou popsány hlavní a dílčí cíle, metody, výzkumný soubor a průběh hlavního výzkumného šetření. Ve výsledcích jsou interpretovány názory brněnských učitelů a rodilých mluvčích na jednotlivé učebnice a jejich následné srovnání. Uvedeny jsou také překážky a celkové zhodnocení výzkumu, mimo jiné i sada doporučení pro budoucí tvůrce učebnic a další doporučení do praxe, která vzešla z polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se všemi respondenty.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the opinions of Czech teachers and native speakers on the most used English language textbooks for 5th grade in Brno primary schools. The aim was to investigate the ways of working with the selected textbook, but also to find out why the teachers chose it as the main didactic tool for teaching. We also found out what the respondents lacked in the textbooks and what aspects they would enrich them with. The thesis is divided into two sections - theoretical and empirical. The theoretical section contains an explanation of the most important concepts and clarification of other contexts related to the research topic, such as the structure and function of textbooks, methods of researching them in history and today, and the ways teachers and students work with textbooks. The empirical section begins by presenting the aim of the pre-research, including its results. Then the main and sub-objectives, methods, research population and the course of the main research investigation are described. In the chapter on results, the opinions of the Brno teachers and the native speakers on individual textbooks and their subsequent comparison are interpreted. Barriers and overall evaluation of the research are also presented, including a set of recommendations for future textbook authors and other recommendations for practice that emerged from semi-structured interviews with all respondents.
