The metamorphoses of color grading after the introduction of digital technologies

Abstract:

Od samého počátku nástupu digitální technologie probíhal vývoj na poli filmového průmyslu závratnou rychlostí vstříc celkové digitalizaci. Cílem této bakalářské práce je nahlédnout do vývoje specifického odvětví filmového průmyslu – jmenovitě color gradingu, jenž primárně zahrnuje různé postprodukční obrazové korekce digitálního záznamu. Výzkum ukázal, že zhruba od roku 2010 do současnosti nepodstoupil color grading výraznější vývoj, nebo přesněji, samotný proces color gradingu se příliš nevyvinul. Za největší milník na cestě k digitalizace můžeme považovat samotnou povahu digitální technologie. Digitální color grading umožnil koloristům používat úpravy, které byly v analogové době považovány za nemožné. V neposlední řadě poskytuje digitální záznam prakticky neomezené možnosti experimentování, testování a ladění bez výraznějšího navýšení produkčních nákladů. V posledních 10 až 15 letech kráčí vývoj ruku v ruce s novými možnosti nabízenými rozličnými druhy gradovacích softwarů. Tento vývoj neumožňuje dosáhnout v minulosti nemožných výsledků, ale spíše celý proces usnadňuje a urychluje a činí jej intuitivnějším. Druhým cílem této práce je porovnat český a americký color gradingový průmysl. V tomto ohledu výzkum ukázal, že se český průmysl od amerického příliš neliší. Hlavní rozdíly nespočívají v samotném procesu, ale spíše v jeho dílčích fázích, jako jsou přípravné práce a natáčení. Důvodem pro to jsou patrně vyšší rozpočty zahraničních produkcí.

Abstract:

Ever since the emergence of digital technology, the film industry has been rapidly evolving towards an overall digitalization. This bachelor thesis aims to provide a dive into the evolution of a specific part of the film industry – namely color grading, which primarily involves various postproduction image corrections of digital footage. Research has shown that in the period from approximately 2010 to present day the color grading industry has not undergone a notable evolution, or to be specific, the color grading process itself has not evolved much. We might consider the nature of digital technology itself to be the biggest step in the overall digitalization. Digital color grading allowed colorists to utilize adjustments they could not imagine possible in the analog era. Last, but not least, the digital nature of the footage and postproduction workflow allowed for virtually unlimited place for experimenting, testing, and fine tweaking without significantly raising production costs. The main evolution in the last 10 to 15 years comes hand in hand with new possibilities offered by the various kinds of color grading software. This development does not allow to achieve results considered impossible in the past, but rather makes the process easier, faster, and more intuitive. The second goal of this thesis is to compare the Czech color grading industry to the industry in the USA. In this aspect research has shown that the Czech industry is not that different from the American one. The main differences would be not in the color grading process though, but rather in its associated phases, such as preproduction and on-set production. Greater production budgets of American films seem to be the key factor here.
