Textometric Treatment and Qualitative Analysis of Homophonies in French Rap

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the problem of homophonies in French rap, which is explored from the point of view of their nature (division to rhymes, assonances and alliterations) and quality (number of phonemes in the acoustic echo). The basic corpus of our qualitative analysis is a collection of 97 texts by three French rappers. In the theoretic part we present the characteristics of French rap from the standpoint of poetry, and at the same time we deal with its thematic and phonetic aspects. We also present the lexicometric programs as well as the programs created for an automatic search of French poetry. The methodology describes the procedure of choosing our corpus and the basic preparatory steps enabling its analysis. In the practical part we present the homophonic rules of French rap as observed in our corpus, and our final marking system. We compare the three interprets from the point of view of the nature and quality of homophonies that they create. We also present contemporary textometric possibilities of an automatic detection of acoustic echoes which enable searching of the words in homophonic positions (using the programs TXM and Lexico3). The purpose of our diploma thesis is to clarify the rules of versification in French rap and to create a transparent system of homophonic marks. These marks would simplify the way towards automatic research of homophonies in French rap, using some of the already existing lexicometric tools.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou homofonií ve francouzském rapu, které zkoumá z hlediska jejich povahy (rozdělení na rýmy, asonance a aliterace) a kvality (počet fonémů ve zvukovém echu). Základním korpusem naší kvalitativní analýzy byl soubor 97 textů tří francouzských rapperů. V teoretické části představujeme vlastnosti francouzského rapu z pohledu poezie, zároveň se zabýváme i jeho tematickou a fonetickou stránkou. Dále představujeme námi používané lexikometrické programy, stejně jako programy automatického výzkumu poezie ve Francii. Metodologie popisuje postup výběru korpusu a základní přípravné kroky umožňující jeho analýzu. V praktické části představíme z korpusu vypozorovaná homofonická pravidla francouzského rapu a náš výslední značkovací systém. Tři interprety porovnáme na základě hlediska povahy a kvality jimi používaných homofonií a představíme současné textometrické možnosti automatického vyhledávání zvukových ech a práce se slovy v homofonických pozicích (s použitím programů TXM a Lexico3). Cílem naší diplomové práce je objasnit problematiku pravidel versifikace ve francouzském rapu, vytvořit přehledný systém homofonických značek a ulehčit tak cestu k automatickému výzkumu homofonií ve francouzském rapu prostřednictvím už dostupných lexikometrických nástrojů.
