Analysis of air temperature and humidity conditions in two different sites in the Antarctic Peninsula region

Abstract:

V oblasti Antarktického poloostrova na meteorologické stanici J. G. Mendela na ostrově Jamese Rosse a Nelson na ostrově Nelson byly sledovány teplotní a vlhkostní poměry za období 2022–2023. Z naměřené teploty vzduchu a relativní vlhkosti byl vypočítán tlak vodní páry. Tyto meteorologické prvky a jejich charakteristiky byly hodnoceny pomocí základních statistických metod pro časové řady a následnou korelační a regresní analýzou pro porovnání závislosti mezi vybranými parametry na obou meteorologických stanicích. Analýza ukázala rozdílný charakter průběhu meteorologických prvků na stanici Mendel, která vykazuje větší sezónní rozdíly a větší rozptyl. Naopak pro stanici Nelson je typický nižší rozptyl s nižšími rozdíly mezi obdobími. Hodnoty porovnávaných parametrů byly vždy vyšší na stanici Nelson s průměrnou teplotní diferencí 3,0 °C, diferencí relativní vlhkosti 13,6 % a 1,4 hPa pro tlak vodní páry. Výsledky potvrzují rozdílné klimatické podmínky na meteorologických stanicích. Stanice Mendel má více kontinentální podmínky, zatímco stanice Nelson má typické oceánské klima.

Abstract:

Air temperature and humidity conditions for the period 2022–2023 were analysed in the Antarctic Peninsula region at the J. G. Mendel station on James Ross Island and Nelson station on Nelson Island. Water vapour pressure was calculated based on the air temperature and relative humidity measurements. These meteorological variables and their characteris¬tics were evaluated using basic statistical methods, followed by correlation and regression analysis to compare the relationship between both meteorological stations. The analyses showed a different pattern of meteorological variables at the Mendel station characterized by significant seasonal differences and greater dispersion, while lower dispersion and seasonal differences were found at the Nelson station. Higher average values of the meteorological parameters were found at Nelson station, with an average temperature difference of 3 °C, 13,6 % for relative humidity, and 1,4 hPa for water vapour pressure. The results highlight the different climatic conditions at both meteorological stations. The Mendel site shows more continental conditions, while the Nelson station has a typical oceanic climate.
