Musical abilities and pronunciation in English as a foreign language learners in primary school

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi úrovní hudebních schopností a receptivním vnímáním výslovnosti angličtiny jako cizího jazyka u žáků čtvrtých tříd základních škol. První část práce čtenáře blíže seznamuje s teoretickými východisky jak z oblasti jazykové, kdy jsou představeny vybrané výsledky kontrastivní analýzy a je pojednáno o receptivní složce výslovnosti, tak z oblasti hudební, z níž se zaměřujeme především na hudební schopnosti a jejich klasifikaci. Dále se zabýváme postavením těchto konceptů v rámci výuky anglického jazyka a hudební výchovy na 1. stupni ZŠ. Empirická část představuje výzkum, jehož cílem bylo odpovědět na otázku, zda spolu souvisí úroveň hudebních schopností a receptivního vnímání výslovnosti. K tomuto účelu sloužil poslechový test, který byl administrován výzkumnému vzorku 78 žáků čtvrtých tříd ZŠ a jehož výsledky byly kvantitativně vyhodnoceny pomocí korelační analýzy. Mezi výsledky testů na hudební schopnosti a receptivní vnímání výslovnosti byla zjištěna středně silná závislost.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with a relation between musical ability and perception of English as a foreign language (EFL) pronunciation of fourth graders of primary school. The first part of the thesis introduces the theoretical background for the research from both EFL teaching, including selected results of contrastive analysis and the receptive part of pronunciation, and musical area, in which the attention is paid to musical abilities and their classification. Moreover, it describes the position of these concepts in teaching English as a foreign language and music at the primary school. The empirical introduces research whose aim was to investigate the relationship between musical abilities and a perception of EFL pronunciation. For this purpose a listening test was created and administered to 78 fourth graders of primary school. Its results were processed by means of correlation analysis and a medium-level correlation was found between the results of the musical abilities test and the perception of the English pronunciation test.
