Burning of Books and Burying Alive of Scholars: The Formation, Evolution and Deconstruction of the Myth

Abstract:

Tato diplomová se práce zabývá dvěma událostmi, k nimž došlo na samém sklonku vlády Qin Shihuanga, a sice spálením knih a pohřbením učenců zaživa (fen shu keng ru). Práce je zaměřena na genezi a vývoj populárního mýtu, podle něhož byly oba tyto incidenty projevem qinské anti-konfuciánské politiky, a na jeho pozdější dekonstrukci. První část práce podává základní historické souvislosti obou událostí a za pomoci konkrétních příkladů ilustruje, jaký význam obě události mají jako jedny ze základních topoi čínské kultury, potažmo v rámci populárního diskursu na Západě. Druhá část práce se zaměřuje na mapování geneze mýtu, a to skrze srovnání několika primárních zdrojů – s přihlédnutím k raně hanským pramenům, jež ani jednu z obou událostí nezaznamenaly – a jejich zasazení do širšího historického a historiografického kontextu (zde práce vychází ze sekundární literatury, a to jak z přehledových, tak z analyticky a teoreticky orientovaných textů). Třetí část práce podává přehled minulé i současné akademické debaty o fen shu keng ru a analyzuje přístupy vybraných významných studií k tomuto tématu. Závěr pak obsahuje shrnutí a zhodnocení předchozích poznatků a jejich implikací.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with two events that occured towards the end of Qin Shihuang's reign, i.e.,the burning of books and burying (alive) of scholars (fen shu keng ru). The thesis focuses on the formation, subsequent evolution, and finally on the recent deconstruction of a popular myth according to which both said events reflected Qin anti-Confucian policies. The first chapter provides basic overview of the historical context for both events and, using specific examples, it illustrates the significance of fen shu keng ru as an important topos in Chinese culture and, by extension, in the Western popular discourse as well. The second chapter aims to trace the formation of the myth, by analyzing and comparing several primary sources – with regard to early Han sources, which didn't mention either of the two incidents – and puting them in a broader historical and historiographical context (here the thesis uses as reference a variety of secondary sources, from surveys to analytical and theoretical texts). The third chapter maps the recent deconstruction of the myth. It provides a brief overview of the past and present academic discourse about fen shu keng ru, and analyzes in greater detail several selected studies on the topic. The conclusion sums up and evaluates the findings from previous chapters and their broader implications.
