Czech and German academic language in comparison. A contrastive analysis of Czech and German linguistic research papers

Abstract:

Czech and German academic languages are very similar due to their geographic proximity and their long common history. However, they show various differences, which can lead to irritation and misunderstanding in intercultural contact. This Ph.D. thesis deals with differences in the linguistic composition of Czech and German academic texts, which are probably caused by differences in the cultures. The basis for this study is a corpus of twelve Czech and twelve German linguistic research papers. The construct of the texts and text commenting devices as a type of speech action have been analysed. In these, aspects of personality and modality demonstrate remarkable differences between the Czech and German texts.

Abstract:

Český a německý vědecký jazyk jsou si vzhledem k sousedství obou zemí a dlouhé společné historie velmi podobné. Přesto vykazují některé rozdíly, které mohou vést k iritacím a nedorozumění v interkulturním kontaktu. Tématem předložené dizertační práce jsou rozdíly v jazykovém ztvárnění českých a německých vědeckých textů, které jsou zřejmě způsobeny rozdílnými kulturními aspekty. Základ zkoumání tvoří korpus z dvanácti českých a dvanácti německých vědeckých textů z oblasti lingvistiky. Analýze byly podrobeny vnější výstavba textů a řečová jednání „Textkommentierung“, přičemž se projevují velké rozdíly zejména v oblasti personality a modality mezi českými a německými texty.
