Properties, levels and analytical methods for determination of Novel flame retardants in the environment

Abstract:

Nové bromované zpomalovače hoření (NBFR) jsou synteticky vyráběné látky. Používají se jako přísada do různých materiálů, které se běžně vyskytují kolem nás (textilie, plasty, nátěrové hmoty, atd.). Jak již z názvu vyplývá, zpomalují nebo předcházejí vznícení materiálu a tím zvyšují jeho požární bezpečnost. Diplomová práce shrnuje současné poznatky o nových bromovaných zpomalovačích hoření a uvádí informace o jejich vlastnostech, výrobě a aplikacích. Praktická část je zaměřena na stanovení těchto látek ve vnitřním ovzduší ve vztahu k vybavení vnitřního prostředí. Během výstavby nové budovy Centra pro výzkum toxických látek v prostředí byly vzorkovány čtyři vybrané místnosti. Vzorkování probíhalo postupně během vybavování místností nábytkem a elektronikou. Nejvyšší nárůst koncentrace NBFR byl zaznamenán ve vzorcích odebraných z místnosti vybavené počítači, což koresponduje se skutečností, že NBFR jsou přidávány do plastů v elektronických zařízeních. Nejčastěji se vyskytujícím NBFR byl dechloran plus (DP) dále pak hexabrombenzen (HBB), 1,2-dibrom-4-(1,2-dibromethyl)cyklohexan (TBECH) a pentabromtoluen (PBT). Pro identifikaci a kvantifikacci těchto látek byla použita plynová chromatografie s hmotnostní detekcí (GC-EI-HRMS).

Abstract:

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are syntetic compounds, widely used as additives to various materials which we can be ussually found around us (textiles, plastics, paints, etc.). As the name suggests, they retard flame or prevent combustion of the materials and they increase fire safety of the materials. This work summarizes the current knowledge of novel brominated flame retardants and provides information about their properties, production and applications. The practical part is focused on the determination of these compounds in indoor air in relation to the equipment. Four selected rooms were sampled during the construction of the new building of the Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment. The highest increase of NBFR concentration was found in samples taken from a room equipped with computers This confirms the fact that NBFRs are frequently added to the materials utilized in electronic devices. The most frequently occurring NBFR was dechlorane plus (DP), hexabromobenzene (HBB), 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl) cyclohexane (TBECH) and pentabromotoluene (PBT). Gas chromatografy coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-EI-HRMS) was used for final identification and quantification of these compounds
