The beginnings of monasticism in the European continental area The Premonstratensians in western Bohemia

Abstract:

Kvalifikační práce pojednává o premonstrátském řádu v Čechách s důrazem na historický vývoj a současnost kláštera premonstrátů v Teplé. Cílem práce je odhalit různé aspekty, kterými klášter v Teplé přispěl k duchovnímu a kulturnímu rozvoji na území západních Čech. Kromě duchovní, kulturní a i hospodářské činnosti se tepelští premonstráti podíleli na šíření vzdělanosti. Začátek práce je zaměřen na samotné založení premonstrátského řádu, jehož zakladatelem byl svatý Norbert z Xantenu. Příchod premonstrátů do Čech sebou přinesl nové zakládání klášterů. Značné ztráty zaznamenal premonstrátský řád během husitských válek, kdy přišel skoro o všechny kláštery. Obnovení klášterů nastalo až během rekatolizace protestantských oblastí v 16. století. Nejvíce pozornosti se v práci dostává tepelskému klášteru. Podkapitoly se zabývají dějinami kláštera od založení blahoslaveným Hroznatou až do současnosti. Střídaly se období pádů a vrcholů. Hroznata založil i ženský klášter premonstrátek v Chotěšově. Knihovna, které je věnována samostatná kapitola obsahuje přes 100 000 knih a patří k největším knihovnám u nás. Další samostatná část je zaměřena na významnou osobnost premonstrátského řádu, kterou je Josef Heřman Tyl. Současný vývoj kláštera je doplněn i o osobní rozhovor s opatem Filipem Zdeňkem Lobkowiczem, Opraem. V roce 2008 se stal klášter Teplá národní kulturní památkou. Klášter má duchoví a kulturní přínos již více než 800 let své existence. Velká zásluha byla zaznamenána především v oblasti školství. Tepelští premonstráti učili na plzeňském gymnáziu a podporovali nadané žáky. Největší přínos, který klášter mohl západním Čechám poskytnout, bylo založení Mariánských Lázní opatem Karlem K. Reitenbergerem.

Abstract:

The qualification thesis is mostly about the Premonstrate Order in Czech with emphasis to the historical progress and the present situation of the Monastery in Teplá. The aim is to show various aspects, through which the monastery has contributed to the spiritual and cultural development in the area of western Bohemia. Besides the spiritual, cultural and economical activities, the Premonstrates from Teplá have also participated in spreading knowledge and education. The beginning of my work is mostly focusing on the establishment of the Premonstrate order itself. The founder of this order was Saint Norbert from Xanten. The arrival of the Premostrates to Bohemia brought with itself also the establishment of new Monasteries. The order has suffered some considerable losses during the Husit Wars, when it lost almost all of its monasteries. The renovation of those unfortunately didn´t happen till the recatolization of the protestant areas in the sixteenth century. The most attention in my work is getting the Monastery in Teplá itself. The subchapters follow up on the history of monastery, since its foundation by the blessed Hroznata, to actual present time. Naturally the times were hard and the monastery went throught some ups and downs. Hroznata was also the founder of the womens monastery in Chotěšov. The library, to which I have dedicated a full chapter contains over 100 000 books and belongs to the largest in the country. Other secluded part is focused on yet another important person of the Premonstrate order, which was Josef Heřman Tyl. The present development of the monastery is also enriched by the personal interview with the Monsigneur Filip Zdeněk Lobkowitz, Oprae. In 2008 the monastery has become a part of the National inheritage. The monastery has spiritually and culturally contributed for over 800 years. A great credit has been recorded specially in the education department. The premonstrates from Teplá have tought at Pilsen gymnasiums and always supported gifted students. However, the largest contribution the premonstrate order could ever give to Czech was the establishment of Marienbad by abbot Charles K. Reitenberger.
