Peter Brook’s ways of theatre making

Abstract:

Ve své disertační práci mapuji tvůrčí dráhu jednoho z nejvýznamnějších divadelních režisérů druhé poloviny dvacátého století Petera Brooka. Sleduji vývoj jeho kariéry od jejích počátků v Anglii v polovině čtyřicátých let až do současnosti a pokouším se vsadit jej do souvislostí, dobového kontextu a pojmenovat možné Brookovy inspirační zdroje. Zabývám se okolnostmi sezony Divadla krutosti v RSC a zlomovými Brookovými inscenacemi té doby (Marat/Sade, US apod.) Další kapitolu věnuji Brookovu odchodu do Paříže a vzniku mezinárodního souboru CIRT. Mapuji průběh tří výzkumných cest, které Peter Brook s tímto souborem na začátku sedmdesátých let podnikl. Zabývám se založením divadla Les Bouffes du Nord, jeho specifickým prostorem a inscenacemi, které Brook v tomto divadle se souborem vytvořil. Zvláštní část práce věnuji rozboru Brookovy inscenace indického eposu Mahábhárata. V poslední kapitole se pokouším stručně nastínit vývoj Brookovy režijní dráhy od konce práce na Mahábháratě do roku 2016.

Abstract:

For my dissertation I decided to chart the creative way of one of the most important theatre director from the 2nd half of the 20th century, Peter Brook. I follow his career from its beginning in England in half of the 40s till today and try to put it into the historical and overall context and name his sources of inspiration. I deal with circumstances of the RSC’s Theatre of Cruelty and the main Brook’s performances coming from this time (Marat/Sade, US etc.). The next chapter is dedicated to his leave to Paris where the international group CIRT was founded. I map three exploratory expeditions which Brook made with this group at the beginning of 70s. I handle with the establishment of the Les Bouffes du Nord theatre, its specific spaces and productions which Brook created here together with CIRT. The specific part of my dissertation is devoted to the analysis of Brook’s adaptation of the Indian epic poem Mahabharata. In the last chapter is concisely outlined the evolution of his career from the time he finished the work on Mahabharata till 2016.
