Using Graded Readers in English Language Teaching at Lower Levels

Abstract:

Abstrakt Cílem této práce je ověřit užitečnost extenzivní četby ve výuce angličtiny. Literatura je zdrojem bohatého jazyka a s její četbou je žádoucí začít v jazykové výuce co možná nejdříve. K tomu pro nižší úrovně pokročilosti poslouží zjednodušená beletristická četba, která je hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce. Pro demonstraci možného přístupu k využití zjednodušeného literárního díla v hodinách angličtiny jsem použila knihu A. C. Doyla The Speckled Band, zjednodušenou pro studenty středně pokročilé úrovně. V rámci pedagogické praxe jsem uskutečnila tři vyučovací hodiny zaměřené na čtení. Popis hodin je spolu s jejich hodnocením součástí praktické části práce. Vhodným využitím literárního díla v hodině cizího jazyka lze nejen zpestřit výuku a obohatit znalosti studentů, ale také motivovat studenty k samostatné četbě, což je jeden z nejdůležitějších úkolů učitele v rámci výuky extenzivního čtení.

Abstract:

Abstract The aim of this thesis is to verify the benefits of extensive reading in English language teaching. Literature is a source of varied language and it is necessary to start with reading as soon as possible. Suitable materials for such a type of activity can be found in simplified non-fiction literature, which is the main topic of this bachelor thesis. To demonstrate a possible approach to using Graded Readers in the classroom, the book The Speckled Band, by A. C. Doyle, adapted for intermediate level, was used. I have taught three English lessons based on the reader. The practical part of this thesis includes their description and evaluation. Appropriate use of literature in foreign language lessons can extend students´ knowledge and can make language study more varied. It also motivates students to further reading, which is one of the most important teacher roles in the teaching of extensive reading.
