Media portrayal of Czech Police and its transformations in Mladá fronta DNES and Právo daily newspapers

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá proměnami mediálního obrazu Policie ČR v denících Mladá fronta DNES a Právo od roku 1988 do roku 2009. Pro analýzu konstrukčních mechanismů a měnících se aspektů mediální obrazu jsme použili kvantitativní obsahovou analýzu vybraných zpravodajských textů, kterou jsme doplnili kvalitativní analýzou využívající prvků sémiotické analýzy. Cílem práce bylo popsat mechanismy a strategie, které dané deníky používají k legitimizaci činnosti policie, jakožto představitele dominantní ideologie, a dále popsat celkový obraz této instituce a jeho proměny. Stať se nesnaží jen kategorizovat výpovědi, ale zobrazit způsob, jakým média postupovala při konstrukci obrazu policistů s ohledem na strategie, technologie a rutiny výroby. Práce tak reflektuje editoriální postupy a rutiny při tvorbě mediálního obrazu policie, konstrukční a skryté významy, které jsou do obrazu zakódovány, ideologické a mocenské tendence, jež se objevují při střetu policie s aktéry sociální deviace. Tato studie se svým tematickým zaměřením pokusila vyplnit mezeru ve výzkumu mediální konstrukce reality a přitáhnout pozornost dalších mediologů k této problematice.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the Czech Police media representation and its transformations from the year 1988 to the year 2009 in Mladá fronta DNES and Právo daily newspapers. We used a quantitative method of content analysis to analyse construction mechanisms and changing aspects of the media portrayal and this way of analyzing were extended by qualitative analysis using some elements of the semiotic approach. The aim of the thesis is to describe the mechanisms and strategies that are used by the daily newspapers with purpose to justify and legetimize police as the representative of the dominant ideology. Another point of the study aims to find the resulting media image of this institution and describe its transformations. The essay does not strive for a mere categorization of utterances, but also for a presentation of methods applied by the media in the portrayal of Czech Police in relation to the strategies, technologies and routines of production. Thus, the thesis reflects the editorial procedures and routines involved in the creation of a picture of the policemen, the constructional and hidden meanings encoded in the picture, ideological and power tendencies appearing within the conflict of the police and the social deviance actors. By its topic the present thesis fills in a gap in the research area of media construction of reality and attempt to draw attention of other media scientists to this issue.
