The impact of the unemployment rate on fertility in different types of welfare state in Europe

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je porovnání vlivu míry nezaměstnanosti na úhrnnou plodnost v letech 2000–2014 mezi jednotlivými typy sociálního státu ve státech Evropské unie a Norska. Prostřednictvím shlukové analýzy provedené na vybraných ukazatelích je sestavena typologie sociálních států pro období 2000–2014. Pro jednotlivé typy sociálních států je následně vytvořen jednotný regresní model s fixními efekty. Rozdíly mezi jednotlivými typy sociálních států v krátkodobé reakci úhrnné plodnosti na míru nezaměstnanosti byly v daném období relativně výrazné. Ve státech severního typu s rozsáhlým a univerzalistickým sociálním státem se tato reakce ukázala jako staticky nevýznamná. Nejsilnější negativní vliv měla míra nezaměstnanosti na úhrnnou plodnost ve státech jižního typu, které bylo možné v mnohých ukazatelích charakterizovat jako opak severního sociálního státu.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to compare the effect of unemployment rate on total fertility rate in years 2000–2014 between different types of welfare state in European Union and Norway. A cluster analysis is used to create a typology of welfare states in years 2000–2014 and united fixed effects regression model is developed for further comparison of five types of welfare state. The differences between the types of welfare states in the short-term response of the total fertility to the unemployment rate were relatively significant in the given period. In states of the northern type with a large and universalist welfare state, this reaction turned out to be statically insignificant. The most severe negative impact of unemployment rate on total fertility was found in southern states, which in many indicators could be characterized as the opposite of the northern welfare state.
