The portrait of the legionary Gajda in literature in the twenties of the twentieth century

Abstract:

Generál Radola Gajda je v románu Radola vyobrazen v nejlepším možném světle. Autor vyzdvihuje generálovy kladné vlastnosti a skutky. Na druhé straně veškeré ty kontroverzní vynechává. Poměrně překvapivé je, že téměř všechny skutečnosti spojené s Gajdou jsou založené na pravdě. Dalším zajímavým aspektem je autorův velmi přesný a podrobný popis bitev. Ota Kárek, autor románu, jednoznačně vycházel z Gajdova díla Moje paměti, ale čerpal i z dalších zdrojů. Popřípadě vložil do knihy své osobní názory, které se ne vždy shodovaly s pohledem Gajdy na danou skutečnost. Postavy důstojníků Kadlece a Ušakova vnímají oba podobně kladně. Jejich pohled se ve velké části rozchází v případě ČSNR, kdy Kárek zastává o poznání negativnější postoje. Gajda a Kárek se nejvíce liší v otázce antisemitismu. Autor románu několikrát v díle prezentuje své protižidovské názory, zatímco Gajda příznivcem antisemitismu nebyl.

Abstract:

General Radola Gajda is pictured in the best possible light in the novel Radola. The author highlights the general's positive attributes and actions. On the other hand he knowingly omits all the controversial ones. To my surprise, almost all the facts associated with Gajda are based on truth. The next interesting aspect is author's accurate and detailed description of battles. Ota Kárek, the author of the novel, definitely took inspiration from Gajda's work Moje paměti, but he surely drew from other sources. In other cases, he presents his own opinions in the novel, which hasn't always been in agreement with Gajda's perspective. Both of them have the same opinions on the characters of officers Kadlec and Ušakov. Their point of view is significantly different in the case of ČSNR, when Kárek holds a more negative views. Gajda and Kárek are completely different in the case of antisemitism. The author of the novel presents his anti-Jewish opinions several times in his book, while Gajda wasn't fond of antisemitism at all.
