Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá osobností Thomase Jeffersona, třetího prezidenta Spojených států amerických a hlavního autora Deklarace nezávislosti, a jeho názory na otroctví a rasovou problematiku. Hlavním zdrojem informací je Jeffersonova kniha Notes on the State of Virginia, v níž v několika kapitolách píše o svých názorech na toto téma. Práce tyto pasáže analyzuje a zasazuje do kontextu Jeffersonova života a jeho názorů o svobodě a rovnosti. Práce také poskytuje historické pozadí a stručně představuje historii otroctví ve státě Virginie v 18. století a na počátku 19., a Jeffersonův životopis.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines the character of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and his views on slavery and racial issues. The main source of information is Jefferson’s book Notes on the State of Virginia, in which he wrote in several chapters about his opinions on this topic. The thesis analyzes these passages and puts them in the context of Jefferson’s life and his beliefs about freedom and equality. The thesis also provides historical background and briefly presents the history of slavery in Virginia in 18th and early 19th century, and Jefferson’s biography.
