Population trends of small and medium-sized towns in peripheral regions in Czechia

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je zhodnotit problematiku populačního vývoje v malých a středně velkých městech v periferních regionech České republiky. V první části práce hodnotím relevanci tohoto tématu pro sídelní systém České republiky a pomocí shrnutí odborné literatury popisuji vývoj osídlení v České republice, specifika evropské urbanizace, identifikuji malá a střední města, periferní regiony a problémy, které jsou s těmito městy a s periferními regiony spojené, a na které musí tato města aktuálně reagovat. V praktické části pracuji již s konkrétním statistickým souborem měst, který rozděluji do kategorií podle změny počtu obyvatel a následně se v případových studiích zabývám třemi městy v periferních regionech České republiky ? městem Milovice, jako městem s největším přírůstkem obyvatel, městem Turnov, zastupující města stabilní a městem, které je zasaženo největším úbytkem obyvatel ? Vrbno pod Pradědem. Na těchto konkrétních městech České republiky ilustruji obecné problémy uvedené v první části práce a také popisuji přístupy těchto jednotlivých měst k problémům, které jsou v každém z těchto měst zcela odlišné.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the problem of population development in small and middle-sized cities in periphery regions of Czech Republic. In the first part of thesis I evaluate relevance of this topic for settlement system of Czech Republic and by using scientific literature, I describe development of settlement in Czech Republic, specifics of European urbanization, identify small and middle-sized cities, periphery regions and problems, which are connected with these cities, and on which cities have to react. In the practical part I work with concrete statistical set of cities, which I divide to categories, according to changes of population and then in cases studies I deal with three cities in periphery regions of Czech Republic ? city Milovice, like a city with the biggest population growth, city Turnov, representing stable cities and city, which is hit by the biggest population decline ? Vrbno pod Pradědem. On these specific cities of Czech Republic I illustrate general problems mentioned in the first part of thesis and I also describe attitudes of these cities to their problems, which are in each of these cities different.
