Passive Voice and Its Presentation in English Language Textbooks for Secondary Schools

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the passive voice and the differences between the passive voice in the English and the Czech language in relation to its presentation in English language textbooks. The aims are to discuss the form and the function of the passive voice in the English language, contrasts the form, function and the types of the passive voice in the Czech and the English language and provide the theoretical basis for the textbook description and assessment. The main aim of the thesis is to compare and assess the presentation of the passive voice in the English language textbooks composed by the English and the Czech authors. The examination of the English language textbooks proved that the definition given to the students use to be insufficient, the presentation of the function of the passive voice is incomplete and the stylistic value of the passive voice is not discussed at all. The English language textbooks composed by English speaking authors do not present the differences between the passive voice in the English and the Czech language. On the other hand, most of the textbooks are motivating and interesting for the students and provide enough practice.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá trpným rodem v angličtině a češtině a rozdíly v jeho prezentaci v učebnicích anglického jazyka. Cílem práce je zaměřit se na formu a funkci trpného rodu v angličtině, porovnat formu, funkci a typy trpného rodu v češtině a angličtině a poskytnout teoretický základ pro popis a hodnocení jazykových učebnic. Hlavním cílem práce je pak porovnat a ohodnotit prezentaci trpného rodu v učebnicích angličtiny, které jsou vytvořeny anglickými resp. českými autory. Analýzou učebnic anglického jazyka bylo zjištěno, že definice trpného rodu, která je poskytována studentům, je často nedostatečná, prezentace funkcí trpného rodu je nekompletní a stylistická hodnota trpného rodu není vůbec prezentována. Učebnice napsané rodilým mluvčím postrádají srovnání trpného rodu v angličtině a češtině. Na druhou stranu jsou učebnice pro studenty většinou atraktivní a motivující a poskytují dostatečné procvičení trpného rodu.
