Time and space in the study of urban public transport

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje kvantitativní časoprostorové analýze vybraných měst postsocialistických států. Výzkum je realizován na základě informací z jízdních řádů, díky kterým dochází k porovnání denních rytmů vybraných měst. Hlavním předpokladem analýzy je existence vazby mezi nabídkou přepravních služeb a měnící se poptávkou po dopravě během dne. Geografická analýza jednotlivých měst se skládá ze tří částí. První z nich se zabývá odhalením denních rytmů na základě nabídky spojů městské hromadné dopravy během dne. Druhá část je věnována charakteristice provozovaných linek, která umožní jiný pohled na časoprostorovou strukturu města. Třetí část se věnuje významným průmyslovým rytmizátorům na území města, které mohou mít nezanedbatelný vliv na městský rytmus. Zjištěné výsledky jsou doplněny o informace denního rytmu Havířova z počátku 90. let, které tak přibližují úroveň změny časoprostorové struktury současných měst.

Abstract:

The research topic of this diploma thesis is the quantitative and time-space analysis of selected cities from post socialist states. The research is conducted based on information collected from available public transport timetables, which allow comparing the usual daytime rhythm of the selected cities. The main premise is then, that there is a relation between the supply of the transport services and changing demand for transport during a day. Geographic analysis of individual cities is consisting from three parts. The first part focuses on the detection of the daytime rhythms based on the existing supply of public transport connections over the day. The second part is dedicated to the public transport connections and their characterization. This characterization allows exploring the time-space structure of a city from a different angle. The third part focuses on important industrial pacemakers present within the city’s territory, which might have considerable influence on the rhythm of the city. Results of the analysis are complemented with information from the early 90’s about daytime rhythm of Havířov, which allow observing changes in time-space structure of contemporary cities.
