Analysis of an English non-literary text and translation into Czech with commentary

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou anglického neliterárního textu a jeho následným překladem do češtiny. Zaměřuje se na důležitost a významnost analýzy výchozího textu v oblasti překladu a navrhuje k tomu profesionální přístup založený na teorii zkušených lingvistů. Práce mimo jiné zkoumá sedm různých textů, které jsou v bakalářské práci v krátkosti představeny. Analýza byla provedena za použití teoretických konceptů, představených různými odborníky. Účelem této analýzy bylo odhalit jakékoli potenciální problémy, které by následně mohly být problematické při překládání do jiného jazyka, porozumět textu, jeho významu a pohledu autora. V průběhu překládání byly použity relevantní strategie a metody, které pomohly vyřešit neekvivalentnost nebo jakýkoliv jiný problém, který nastal mezi jazyky. Analýza potvrdila, že každý zdrojový text je jiný a má své specifické znaky, jež jsou jazykově a kulturně specifické.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with an analysis of an English non-literary text and its subsequent translation into Czech with a commentary. It focuses on the importance of a source-text analysis in the field of translation and suggests a professional-based approach to it based on the theory of experienced linguists. This thesis examines seven different texts which are briefly introduced in the thesis. An analysis is carried out applying the theory concepts that were introduced by various experts. The purpose of the analysis was to discover any potential issues that could be problematic while translating to a different language and to understand the text, its meaning, and author's point of view. The translation then applied relevant translation strategies and methods in order to deal with non-equivalence or any other problems that occurred between the languages. The analysis proved that each source is different and has its own specific features which are in fact language and culture specific.
