Teaching pronunciation to learners with dyslexia

Abstract:

This thesis investigates ways and principles in teaching rhythm to learners of EFL with dyslexia, which are subsequently applied and examined in practice. In the theoretical part, the phenomenon of rhythm is described. The importance of pronunciation, and rhythm in particular, is subsequently interpreted in relation to communicative competence, followed by the discussion of whether rhythm should be taught. As next, the learning disability dyslexia is defined, and its symptoms are described and related to the specific conditions of learning English as a Foreign Language. Particular attention is devoted to ways of teaching rhythm to learners of EFL with dyslexia. The topic is completed with the chapter on course design. In the practical part of the thesis, the author attempts to design, carry out, and reflect on the course, where rhythm is taught to learners of EFL with dyslexia. The outcomes of the research are then assessed in the light of the course aim achievement, and learners' feedbacks obtained through interviews. In the conclusion, the theoretical points are related to and contrasted with the experience from the practical part of this paper, and further modifications are proposed.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá principy výuky rytmu žákům s dyslexií. Tyto principy jsou posléze použity v praxi. V praktické části práce je nejprve popsán rytmus a jeho význam je poté vyložen ve vztahu ke komunikační kompetenci. Diskuze na téma jestli by se rytmus měl vyučovat je předmětem další kapitoly. Následně je definována porucha učení, dyslexie, a její symptomy jsou popsány a vztaženy ke specifickým podmínkám učení se angličtiny jako cizího jazyka. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována způsobům výuky rytmu žákům angličtiny jako cizího jazyka s dyslexií. Problematika je doplněna o kapitolu o tvorbě jazykového kurzu. V praktické části práce se autorka pokouší navrhnout, zrealizovat a zreflektovat kurz rytmu pro žáky angličtiny jako cizího jazyka s dyslexií. Výsledky výzkumu jsou hodnoceny v závislosti na dosažení cíle kurzu žáky s dyslexií a vzhledem k jejich zpětným vazbám. Na závěr jsou zkušenosti z praktické části porovnány s východisky z teoretické části a další modifikace jsou navrženy.
