Analyzing Face-Threatening Humor in Ryanair's Customer Interactions on Twitter

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu ofenzivních typů humoru, které společnost Ryanair používá na Twitteru. Jejím cílem je identifikovat strategie signalizování, logické mechanismy a způsob, jakým je dosaženo ofenzivního aspektu v těchto formách humoru. K dosažení zmíněných cílů byla zvolena Obecná teorie verbálního humoru (GTVH), která byla aplikována na 75 interakcí společnosti se zákazníky. Zároveň práce hodnotí aplikovatelnost tohoto teoretického rámce na případy interaktivního humoru v prostředí digitálních platforem. Zjištění naznačují, že společnost Ryanair používá neexplicitní signalizaci, čerpá humor z překrucování zamýšlených významů zákazníků a ofenzivního aspektu dosahuje především přímými reakcemi, absencí zmírňovacích prostředků a nekooperací. GTVH se také ukázala jako aplikovatelná ve většině analyzovaných příkladů. Práce přispívá k existujícím výzkumům v oblasti pragmatické lingvistiky, které se zabývají humorem v kontextu sociálních sítí.

Abstract:

This thesis explores Ryanair’s use of face-threatening humor on Twitter, identifying its signaling strategies, logical mechanisms, and how its face-threatening aspect is achieved. Applying the General Theory of Verbal Humor, the study analyzes 75 instances of Ryanair’s humorous exchanges with customers to fulfill these objectives, while also assessing the framework’s applicability to instances of interactive humor within digital platforms. Findings indicate that Ryanair uses non-explicit signaling, derives humor from challenging customer interpretations, and achieves face-threatening effects primarily through direct customer address, absence of mitigation, and uncooperativeness. Additionally, the GTVH has proven applicable in the majority of examples analyzed. The thesis contributes to the existing pragmatic research dedicated to humorous practices occurring in the context of social media.
