Memory and urban identity formation: the case of Berlin

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se soustředí na vztah paměti s její fyzickou reprezentací v prostoru. S využitím konceptu kolektivní paměti jakožto teoretického nástroje zkoumání formování vztahu k minulosti popisuje přístup oficiálních institucí a obyvatel sjednoceného Berlína ke své vlastní historii zatížené dědictvím dvou po sobě následujících totalitních režimů. V první části práce teoreticky ukotvuje sociologické pojetí paměti její společenskou podmíněností, poukazuje na vztah paměti, identity a prostoru. Následně prostřednictvím vyhodnocení přístupu ke dvěma s totalitou spojenými prvky urbánní zástavby, tedy plochy, na které se nacházelo sídlo pruského královského rodu, než jej nahradil dnes již stržený Palác republiky, bývalé správní a kulturní centrum východní části města, na jehož místě vyroste replika dříve strhnutého zámku, a Památníku holocaustu, popisuje význam, který tyto stavby hrají v procesu vyjadřování se k minulosti a rekonstrukce identity sjednoceného města. Zatímco destrukce městského zámku a jeho následovníka, Paláce republiky, je odrazem snahy potlačit budovami reprezentované hodnoty, výstavba Památníku holocaustu je naopak vyjádřením úsilí zpřítomnit varovný odkaz s sebou symbolicky nesený, stejně jako je znakem přijmutí nacistické minulosti.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with relation between memory and its spatial representation. Using the collective memory concept as a research tool explaining one’s relation to past, this work describes the official authorities’ and unified Berlin’s inhabitants’ attitude toward the totalitarian heritage burdened history. First part of the thesis theoretically anchors the sociological concept of memory with its social descent and points to a relation of memory, identity and space. Subsequently, evaluating the treatment of urban elements connected with totalitarian past, Prussian royal family residence, its nowadays already demolished successor, former East Berlin’s political and cultural center, Palace of the Republic, and its forthcoming rebuilt descendant, and Holocaust Memorial, it describes the meaning these buildings have in the process of assuming an attitude towards the past and towards the adjustment of unified Berlin’s identity. While destruction of the royal family residence and its successor, Palace of the Republic, mirrors the effort of suppressing the buildings’ representing values, Holocaust Memorial construction reflects the ambition of bringing the symbolically entailed warning sign into space, as well as to represent the acceptance of Nazi past.
