The Social Construction of the Serial Killer in American Cinema at the turn of the 20th/21 st century

Abstract:

Metodologicko-teoretickým výchozím bodem práce bude Geertzův pojem zhuštěného popisu a s ním spojena koncepce popisované sociální reality jakožto konstruktu tvořeného výzkumníkem, resp. autorem. Teorie zhuštěného popisu neruší rozdíl mezi sociologickým vědeckým textem a literární fikcí. Předpokládá však, že je každý sociologický text vytvořený svým autorem a v tomto smyslu pouze reprezentuje sociální realitu, která je v něm tvůrčím způsobem interpretována, např. selekce postav nebo připisování motivací jednotlivým postavám ve vědeckých výstupech kvalitativní sociologie a sociální antropologie. Na druhé straně může mít sociologické ambice jakákoliv umělecká fikce, ať už literární nebo filmová, v tom smyslu, že může v podobě fiktivních míst, dějů a postav poměrně přesně a zdařile reprezentovat sociální realitu, byť v zastřené formě. Cílem výzkumu bude zodpovězení otázky, jaká sociální fakta jsou podle vybraných filmů reprezentujících americkou popkulturu přelomu 20. a 21. století zodpovědná za to, že se jedinec stává sériovým vrahem. Kritériem výběru vzorku pro kvalitativní obsahovou analýzu bude popularita jednotlivých snímků (četnost v nabídkách filmoték typu Netflix, Amazon, HBO) a sériový vrah jakožto hlavní postava. Analytické nástroje pro rozbor budou získávány na základě sociologické literatury věnované zejména otázkám primární socializace, fungování sociálních norem a sankcí za jejich nedodržování, sociální deviace a sociální konstrukce reality. Tyto otázky totiž určují povahu mezilidských vztahů a souvisejí tak s problematikou utváření osobnosti sériového vraha.

Abstract:

The methodological and theoretical starting point of the thesis will be Geertz's notion of condensed description and the associated concept of the described social reality as a construct created by the researcher, virtually the author. The theory of condensed description does not abolish the distinction between the sociological scientific text and literary fiction. However, it assumes that each sociological text is created by its author and in this sense merely represents the social reality that is creatively interpreted in it, e.g. the selection of characters or the attribution of motivations to individual characters in the scientific outputs of qualitative sociology and social anthropology. On the other hand, any artistic fiction, whether literary or cinematic, can have sociological ambitions in the sense that it can represent social reality quite accurately and successfully, albeit in a disguised form, in the form of fictional places, events and characters. The aim of the research will be to answer the question of what social facts, according to selected films representing American pop culture at the turn of the 20th century, are responsible for an individual becoming a serial killer. The criteria for selecting the sample for the qualitative content analysis will be the popularity of the individual films (frequency in the offerings of film libraries such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO) and the serial killer as the main character. The analytical tools for the analysis will be drawn from the sociological literature on primary socialisation, the functioning of social norms and sanctions for non-compliance, social deviance and the social construction of reality. These issues determine the nature of interpersonal relationships and are thus related to the issue of the formation of the serial killer's personality.
