Effective Teaching in a Group versus One-to-One Course at a Language School

Abstract:

This thesis investigates ways of effective teaching in group and in one-to-one courses. The research centers around a language school where I am a practicing teacher of English. In the theoretical part, the present practice of teaching English at a language school, the setting of teaching and the learners are discussed and the role of the teacher in these two forms is discussed. The next part looks at materials and coursebooks and main differences between these two forms and their advantages and disadvantages are defined. The practical part presents planning and managing the class and deals with correcting and assessment of learners. Opinions of other teachers by means of a questionnaire are examined here and compared with mine concerning effective teaching in group and one-to-one classes. The final part outlines teaching strategies that can be applied in these two forms of teaching and my hypothesis is tested out.
