The issue of self-harm in young adolescents from the perspective of school psychologists

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkušenostmi školních psychologů se sebepoškozováním u dětí staršího školního věku. Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jak školní psychologové vnímají a konceptualizují fenomén sebepoškozování, jaká specifika mají děti staršího školního věku, jež se sebepoškozují, jak vypadá práce s těmito dětmi, a jak probíhá komunikace a spolupráce se třetími stranami. V teoretické části je komplexně představen fenomén sebepoškozování, včetně možností diagnostiky, psychiatrických komorbidit, prevalence, etiologie a terapie. Popsána jsou též specifika období staršího školního věku a pozice školního psychologa. Pro zodpovězení výzkumných otázek byl zvolen kvalitativní design výzkumu za využití polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, které byly vedeny se šesti respondenty. K analýze dat byla zvolena tematická analýza, pomocí které bylo identifikováno celkem 18 témat, jež jsou prezentovány ve čtyřech tematických okruzích odpovídajících na výzkumné otázky. V diskusi jsou dále témata zasazena do kontextu teoretických poznatků. Výsledky práce mohou přispět k hlubšímu pochopení fenoménu sebepoškozování na českých základních školách a mohou vést k implikacím do praxe, jelikož mohou posloužit jako inspirace pro jakéhokoliv školního psychologa.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with school psychologists' experiences with self-harm among young adolescents (12-15 years). This thesis aimed to find out how school psychologists perceive and conceptualize the phenomenon of self-harm, what the specifics of young adolescent children who self-harm are, what working with these children looks like, and how communication and cooperation with third parties take place. In the theoretical part, the phenomenon of self-harm is described in depth, including the diagnostic possibilities, psychiatric comorbidities, prevalence, aetiology, and therapy. The specifics of young adolescence and the position of a school psychologist are also described. A qualitative research design was chosen using semi-structured interviews with six respondents to answer the research questions. A thematic analysis was chosen for data analysis, with the help of which a total of 18 themes were identified, which are presented in four thematic areas corresponding to the research questions. In the discussion, the topics are further placed in the context of theoretical knowledge. The results of the thesis can contribute to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of self-harm in Czech elementary schools, and they can have practical implications as they can serve as inspiration for any school psychologist.
